Ulcer on my tongue like a crater on the moon

Mydogisagentleman · 09/06/2024 07:34

Just that. I bit my tongue about 3 weeks ago which caused I to swell. I managed to bite it again and it developed an ulcer.
This is extremely painful and I have tried rinstead pasties cloveoil, anubesol, anubesol extra and a gel from the dentist.
It's so sore that it affects my sleep and my speech.
Does anybody have any other ideas?

I always thought Bonjela got rid of mouth ulcers, although I'm not sure it claims to on the packet.

Also, I have a notion that salt will help (dab it on and leave it as long as possible - hold the affected area away from the rest of your mouth so it doesn't get sucked off.

Mydogisagentleman · 09/06/2024 08:37

I omitted bonjela from my list!
I have been doing salty rinses, but I'll give the pure salt a go once I get home from work.
Thank you

Salt water rinses, iglu gel and paracetemol/ibuprofen.

Also, chlorhexidine mouthwash can help (corsodyl or chemist own brand)

1Crazyplantlady · 09/06/2024 08:42

My husband gets regular horrible ulcers, he swears by chlorhexidine mouthwash, it numbs it aswel as the antiseptic helping it heal. You can buy corsadyl or unbranded it's chlorhexadine mouthwash. If that hasn't started working in a day or two though I would go get it checked out, 3 weeks is a long time to have an ulcer. There's a prescription only treatment can be prescribed if the corsadyl doesn't work.

Do you think you might need antibiotics OP? If it’s gone on for three weeks and is stopping you sleep and eat I don’t think it would be unreasonable to see a GP.

Mykittensmittens · 09/06/2024 08:44

Difflam spray.

my poor DM is plagued with them. She’s seen specialists and everything, even the experts say ‘it’s one of those things’. However she has learnt they can become infected. So maybe if yours is still angry and raw after that length of time, you might need to get it checked.

Ineffable23 · 09/06/2024 08:44

I think pure salt will be absolute agony, you would literally be rubbing salt in the wound.

I have found corsodyl medicated mouthwash effective in the past - literally just dabbing it on with a cotton bud. Worth being careful though because after a while I had a bad reaction to it and my whole tongue swelled up, which was super unpleasant.

Mumoftwo1316 · 09/06/2024 08:44

I chew on a vitamin B tablet. Sounds crazy (and tastes foul) but it helps them heal quicker for me.

I used to get horrific mouth ulcers very often but now I've found the main risk factor for me is being thirsty at night. So now I drink a whole jug of water through each night and when I do this, I don't get them. (I do sometimes need to get up to wee but on balance I prefer that to the ulcers!)

Littleredcorvettepurplerain · 09/06/2024 08:45

Zinc helps with healing. x

Tinkerbot · 09/06/2024 08:47

I use this but the ulcers are usually small —
Iglu Gel is designed as a multi-use mouth ulcer treatment. The gel contains a local anaesthetic to help numb the pain associated with ulcers, while also creating an adhesive, protective layer over the ulcer.

entiredayfighting · 09/06/2024 09:13

Go back to your dentist.
The next things I would prescribe in this case would likely be a steroid based mouthwash and also I'd recommend something like difflam to help with the pain.
If traumatic it should heal but please see your dentist tomorrow

JoJothegerbil · 09/06/2024 09:54

As hot water as you can bear works to relieve the pain for me. My nana gave me this tip as she used to get really bad mouth ulcers. It seems to shrink them a bit.

Mydogisagentleman · 09/06/2024 10:00

I'm just waiting for the chemist to open and will try to see the dentist tomorrow.
I did buy a general multivitamin-£12 for 30!
Been taking it for a week.
Thank you all

Iglu gel was the only thing that worked for me when I got mouth ulcers but I read on here that they have discontinued it.

Mydogisagentleman · 09/06/2024 11:51

Iglu gel not available. The 4 year old pharmacy assistant didn't know why.
I now have chlorhexidine mouth wash and zinc tablets. What a lucky ducky I am.
I had a quick Google, apparently they are common in people who have stopped smoking.
I am now a 3 months in vaper so I doubt that's the cause

Agreed - I had an ulcer just like yours years ago and the only thing that shifted it was antibiotics

This is a dental problem, not a gp problem. OP please don't contact your gp as they aren't best placed to advise, and it is rare to require antibiotics. A dentist can prescribe antibiotics if necessary, but really the next line treatment is likely steroid treatment and pain relief.

Mystro202 · 09/06/2024 13:40

I used to suffer very badly with mouth ulcers. A very good doctor recommended me to get Lysine supplements. I take them regularly since and they prevent ulcers. If I do get one randomly (when not taking the supplements) I take one or two and it clears them up really quickly. Miracle things that not many people know about.

Deebee90 · 09/06/2024 14:12

I get absolutely horrible mouth ulcers thanks to a b12 deficiency, I’m talking all in my throat and mouth it’s vile. The only thing that saves me is chlorhexidine mouth wash I’m the corsodyl form. Nothing else compares to it and when I use it I don’t get them .

PositivelyGlowing · 12/06/2024 08:30

Regarding Iglu Gel - it's no longer available because the manufacturer couldn't longer source one of the main ingredients. Hell of a shame because it was very effective, particularly as it adhered to the ulcer and surrounding tissue and so helped the healing and created a protective layer.
