What is an insurance broker?

Been trying to look into car insurance for dd. Everywhere we check is coming in at 3400+ she can't go on anyone else's insurance as no one else drives or has a licence.

Shes looking at run around 2nd hand cars around 1500 mark. Small engine 1.0 - 1.4

We have been looking on money supermarket and similar.

I read that an insurance broker can get it cheaper. But not sure what that is?

Also why does things like occupation matter. Dd does not work. But her son has special needs but does not give options for that . Only thing she can tick is unemployed or house maker.

An insurance broker is like a go between between yourself and insurance companies to try and broker the best price and deal for yourself. The price of insurance is based on what risk you present to them as a client hence the type of questions asked . Your job for example if you were someone that worked in a high stress role working nights against a office worker working days the chances of you having an accident due to lack of sleep is higher than an office worker working days.

Thank you. So is it worth trying an insurance broker or is it no better than me looking in comparison sites ?

The comparison websites are a form of insurance broker.

I prefer a High St insurance broker with an office I can either visit in person or phone up and speak to the same one or two people each time as you get a better service, can often get as good or better price than an online website.

As the above posters have said. An insurance broker is someone whose job it is to search for the very best insurance prices for you. I always use one. It basically hands the hard work over to someone else with all the information and expertise at their finger tips. They take commission from the insurance company so you don't pay extra for their service.

An insurance broker is a middle man/woman who has access to a wide range of insurers/policies, and can help find the best one for you.

They are particularly helpful for people who have non-standard requirements - as you have found, those situations don't work well on a comparison site.

The reason occupation is taken into account is based on experience of risk - for example, office based roles and local government are considered low risk, while footballers, actors and journalists might be considered high risk.

Where you live also affects your policy.

Has your DD tried an insurer that offers black box insurance? That's often cheaper, plus she will earn discounts if she doesn't have claims as she progresses.

There'll be a option in the drop down menu for Carer-non professional or something similar.

I know that area of living used to make a difference. But just out of interest we put dd London address. Then we tried address in Hastings just to see. and it came out the same.

The 3400 was with a black box. But I have heard mixed messages. Such as you can get penalised for breaking sharply. Even though you may have had to due to a cyclist cutting infront of you . For example.

Area of living is a big factor in risk and most certainly does make a difference. If you keep putting different addresses into comparison sites it implies to the algorithm that you could be lying and will actually begin to raise your quotes so I’d suggest that you don’t do that.

Broker was 100% worth it for us, I genuinely could’ve hugged her. The quotes that we were getting on comparison sites were crazy, she was able to get it down to a far more reasonable figure with a better policy all round

Good luck OP. Insurance is a huge cost for new drivers these days, and it sounds like being able to get about would make a big difference for your DD and her son.

I hope you get something manageable xx
