Is this reasonable 3 month wear? Shoes

Socksnshoes · 08/06/2024 08:25

I rarely return anything and wonder what is reasonable. Clearly they need a good polishing.
They have been worn 3 months and I have replaced them.
Was thinking this shop doesn’t feel like reliable quality anymore.

They look much older than 3 months, very heavily worn.

Socksnshoes · 08/06/2024 08:39

Thanks. Maybe I will try returning them.

Yes they look pretty battered.

How often have you worn them?

FlyingSoap · 08/06/2024 08:42

If it’s kids shoes yes it’s reasonable. Children wear their shoes down. There isn’t much you can do. I used to fit children’s shoes. It really is just one of those things. I’d be expecting to buy new shoes for a child of any age at least 4 times a year anyway.

BloodyAdultDC · 08/06/2024 08:44

If they're kid's shoes that have been worn every day for school Id say that's pretty good going.

Walking to/from school, 3 playtimes every day, trainer style shoes are going to get roughed up.

Get some polish on, they'll be fine to the end of term.

Smartiepants79 · 08/06/2024 08:49

Worn by who? Doing what?
A 9 year old boy playing football and rough housing on the playground 5 days a week? Then I’d say that’s normal (if a bit on the heavy side) wear. Some kids are very heavy on their shoes.
I would be very surprised if the shop is interested in refunding or replacing shoes your child has been wearing for 3 months.

What make/Brand of shoe are these?
I have some very similar and they are in much better condition and must be 2 years old at least. I also wear them at least 3-4 times a week - work shoes and I do 12 hour shifts.

Socksnshoes · 08/06/2024 09:02

Sorry I should have said - primary school kids shoes. Worn 4 days a week and has shoes to change into for outdoor play if muddy/wet.

I’m surprised people expect to replace school shoes up to 4 times a year. I usually only replace once mid year which is usually needed size wise. He normally has proper trainers which perhaps are more hard wearing.

Good to get others perspective thanks. I wasn’t sure. (I replaced them at half term so not too bothered about returning, was just a thought).

They look like they have plenty of life in them yet, they're just well worn and need a clean.

thedendrochronologist · 08/06/2024 09:12

Depends where from and how much?

£10 from shoezone - typical
£50 From Clarks I'd be annoyed

Oblomov24 · 08/06/2024 09:31

YABVU to even consider returning. This is just standard wear and tear. I'm actually sniggering. Some children are just heavier wearers of school shoes, running around, playing, playing football etc.

ItsAStupidQuestion · 08/06/2024 09:33

My DS8 is on his 7th pair of shoes since Sept.... 🙈 I've tried expensive pairs, cheap pairs and everything in between but nothing makes a difference. Had to buy some just last week to get him through to the end of term.

Notthatcatagain · 08/06/2024 09:42

Are they leather? If so then they need a good coat of proper shoe polish. I always found with kids shoes that a weekly coat of black shoe polish made a huge difference to how long they looked decent

mitogoshi · 08/06/2024 09:47

If worn daily and football etc played in playground they look normal! Try polish or scuff coat. DDs looked like that but still got 2 terms wear then switched to sandals for summer, she played football every break with the boys

mitogoshi · 08/06/2024 09:48

The fact he has shoes to change into doesn't mean he does remember!

Marblessolveeverything · 08/06/2024 09:49

The consumer European guide sets three months as reasonable for shoes. Not sure if UK has deviated from that post Brexit.

The child is pretty hard on the tops of the shoes, are they kicking or dragging their feet or scooting?

I would recommend a pair next that has the sole go up and over the toes to give extra protection. Growth wise parents should be checking size every three months, mine could go through two size changes in a school year.

That was what our training said back in the 90s.

Agree.

BardsAreAssholes · 08/06/2024 09:53

As primary school shoes, yes, that's reasonable wear and tear - although to keep them in better condition they benefit from regular cleaning and polishing to keep the leather looking half decent.

Lord knows I never bothered to, though.

There is nothing more brutal on shoes than to be worn day in, day out in all weathers by an active primary school child. They will 'last' more than 3 months but look a state. I replace when grown out of or when they have actual holes.

Socksnshoes · 08/06/2024 10:04

7th pair!! That makes me feel better.

These were M&S and not expensive so can see my expectation is unrealistic.

They are now in the recycling bag they were headed to when I raised the question. I was thinking it was a bit poor that sensible shops were producing low quality shoes but I guess that’s why they are cheap. That said cheaper Adidas tensaurus were always worn longer and never looked like this.

i took a stand refusing to buy expensive Nike trainers when I got these. DS now feels vindicated!

Exactly this. Where they're from is hugely relevant.

My kids are either Clarks or startrite and usually last the full year

I don't think it's unreasonable then for kids shoes especially if they're being worn every day for school, they'll have been running around and playing football in them at playtime probably.
I bought my year 4 DD a pair of trainers less than a month ago, made a mistake in letting her choose pale pink, they look awful already- no holes or anything but so dirty! Have been in the washing machine twice already. Grey or black next time!!

DelphiniumBlue · 08/06/2024 10:13

You can superglue round the edges and apply some polish to get you through to the end of term. I don't see how you can really blame the suppliers for what has what clearly been very rough treatment.
FWIW, my boys didn't play football and their shoes lasted much longer than those of their friends who did. Not sure that helps you though!

Good idea, you can actually get shoe glue - I used it to fix some sandals and it worked great. It think this pair would last until the summer hols with a bit of glue!
