Why don't they tell us the E-coli source so we can avoid it?

We're being warned about this current strain of E-coli. It sounds as though they've learned enough about the source to have an idea what it is. Why not tell the public so we can reduce our chance of getting it?

Of particular concern for the elderly, young children and anyone immunocompromised.

I'm waiting for the results of my sample. But yes, 10th day of diarrhoea, first few days I had a fever on and off, felt horrendous, slept whenever i wasn't on the toilet, absolutely uncontrollable diarrhoea and stomach cramps. No vomiting or feeling nauseous whatsoever.
I feel OK between bouts now, but the bouts are still really horrible ans give me stomach cramps. You need to get a sample to the doctor.

How long after eating the avocado did you become unwell? X

Well, I'll throw my conspiracy hat into the ring: E-coli is the official explanation but.......what if the authorities aren't certain? Or haven't even got a clue? Or know exactly what it is but daren't make it public?

Absolute bollocks. It's readily identifiable.

These cases will be members of the public going to their GP or the hospital and the NHS doing the tests.

It's a reportable disease so all cases are reported to the UKHSA by the NHS. That's how they spot the trends.

I’ve just had avocado so I’ll report back in 2 days!

LeopardsRockingham · 08/06/2024 18:12

I got ecoli from water last summer in an area that was "clear", the majority of our coastline had been closed due to algae. But the most touristy bit stayed open. This was confirmed by environmental health as to where I'd caught it.
The government can lie ....

I wasn't even swimming just drying children. I am immunocompramised though. My DS then caught it from me and ended up with HUS syndrome which caused kidney failure- thankfully restored. We were ill for almost 2 months. My potassium was so low I ended up in critical care.

If anyone thinks they have it, our symptoms were not being able to keep anything in, especially down below, a sip of water would cause quick painful diarrhea. Please get checked out if it hasn't settled quickly

I’ve just had avocado so I’ll report back in 2 days!

My avocados came with my online shopping today - they might sit in the fruit bowl for the next 2 days until you do!

maddiemookins16mum · 08/06/2024 18:38

My neighbour is a Nurse where several people were admitted to hospital. Bagged salad has been mentioned.

I had mine 12 days ago, so hopefully none of that batch are still around.

Springwatch123 · 08/06/2024 19:35

HUS can be a very nasty disease. They thought my dc had it but it wasn’t the cause of his kidney problems.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 09/06/2024 00:57

That seems to be just self reports of general food poisoning - many different sources and collections of symptoms, and therefore likely to be multiple different organisms rather than this specific E coli strain.

Food poisoning happens all over the world, all the time. That's normal.

Still fine here! I’m giving it another couple of days before I start on the next one!

Countrylife2002 · 09/06/2024 08:11

I’m not sure how avocados could have e-coli. They’re not in the ground like salad.

That sais June 2023? Weird

I'm going to stay off salad for a bit just incase

Passiflora2 · 09/06/2024 08:26

My daughter is currently very ill and has no idea what it is. I haven’t heard anything. About this outbreak. Does anyone have any links?

The worst food poisoning I've ever had was from fish in a restaurant. It took weeks to fully recover. I hope all affected feel better soon!

40weeksmummy · 09/06/2024 11:22

I didn't eat any salad or avocado and still with terrible diarrhea at least 5 times a day (second week)

BurntBroccoli · 11/06/2024 21:25

This link has it as a dairy item:

metro.co.uk/2024/06/10/ready-eat-dairy-item-likely-caused-e-coli-outbreak-37-hospitalised-21002784/

Wish they would announce what it is. I've had to throw away my stir fry (with bean sprouts) and bagged salad as really don't want to get ill.
I had salmonella about 20 years ago and thought I was going to die so paranoid about this.
Also wish they would release data where the cases were. I would like to map them!

nocoolnamesleft · 11/06/2024 21:36

It is speculated as a dairy item. I'm afraid they can't announce what it is until they have actually tracked down what it is, and then it will be announced.

That article headline is a bit misleading. It's quoting a scientist speculating that a ready to cook dairy item is most likely. It's not saying that what any specific evidence from this outbreak is pointing to I don't think.

Countrylife2002 · 11/06/2024 21:54

Interestingly I’ve looked for a premium brand of cottage cheese in 3 supermarkets this week and it’s not there !

Countrylife2002 · 11/06/2024 21:55

What would be a ready to cook dairy item?
