How long are we likely to commemorate the world war events?

Seeing the footage of the D Day today made me wonder how long this will go on for. My generation had grandparents who fought and some parents who were young children in WW2. I remember grandparents saying about their parents experienceof WW1 too. I feel lucky to grow up in a free country, but my kids don't have the same links or memories.

We don't still commemorate ancient battles that were won, or any infighting between the nations of our island. The world wars were on a much larger scale and had a very clear and evil enemy, so I would expect more collective remembering. I very much hope we don't have an equally big, or bigger, conflict in the future, so I assume that these things will go on for many years to come. Is there precedence from history?

My Great Grandmother lost 3 boys in WW 1 imagine the pain of that . On top of that she lost her first born child a daughter aged 3 , another daughter aged 2 and her first Grandchild aged 4 . She died of a heart attack after hearing her other two sons were going to be sent to a war zone in Palestine a few years later .

Look at any war memorial and you find several of the dead with the same surname. We need to remember they died to preserve European countries we had treaties with. Obviously WW1 was appalling but we need to understand the subsequent peace had consequences and led partially to the rise of the Nazis. This history matters and will always have lessons for us. We need to remain aware of why WW2 happened and understand that European countries trying to work together afterwards was very much in the interests of all of us. We must continue to learn. It’s not about glorifying war. It’s about remembering the dead, applauding their sacrifices and trying to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

That's heartbreaking. And I'd bet she wasn't the only one to loose multiple children.

It annoys me to see teenagers skateboarding on the memorials they have no respect . Don't they teach history in schools anymore?
