Time table at uni help (UWE), when are holidays?!

My DD starts in September.l,as an undergrad, reading Media. It is clear that Freshers week starts on 15 sept, but we cannot make sense of the term dates at all. We live overseas and are trying to get a rough idea of when she can come home!

It says winter break 23dec to Jan 6.. than surely can't be right?

Does anyone else have kids ther, who can shed some.light?

It will probably depend on when her last exam is for that term. I would be surprised if they have already been set. They are very university dependent. I would recommend she emails the university.

MilliMollieMandi · 06/06/2024 15:45

That sounds about right. Holidays - Christmas and Easter - might be extended if there is a period for revision at the end of Semester One and Semester Two. Half terms become 'reading week' depending on the university.

This looks fairly clear. Shorter winter and spring holidays than many unis, but finish early in the summer.

Thanks! On that screen shot, that shows a gap between 10 -27 Jan, with no teaching?

My DS is just finishing at UWE - they do have short Christmas and Easter breaks of around 2 weeks so that sounds about right. They go back for a week of revision type sessions and then have a couple of weeks for exams, before starting Semester 2 around the beginning of February. He has never had reading weeks on his course, but some might.

If it's semesterised then the time between 10/1 and 27/1 will be the assessment period.

Fgfgfg · 06/06/2024 16:10

It may depend on the type of assessments. If it's all exams or presentations they will be in person 10-27 January. If the assessments are all submitted online then there's no reason to be there until the next teaching period starts.
6-10 Jan sounds like revision/tutorial sessions and lots of places do those online now.

If you look above you'll see that up to 24 Jan is covered under teaching and assessment.

It's the overlaying of semesters onto our traditional terms that makes it all look a a bit weird!

My Ds has always had to go back for revision/tutorial sessions at UWE - done in person.
Other courses may do it differently of course.

you are paying overseas student fees for your daughter to study…. media?

mitogoshi · 06/06/2024 16:20

I wouldn't book flights yet as depending on course, they may go back later in Jan that that implies

PatriciaHolm · 06/06/2024 16:28

That sounds about right - bear in mind the 23rd is a Monday so she'll almost certainly actually be done on the Friday 20th. And as others say, the week beginning 6th will vary as to what is required of her. DDs first week back (studying media, but not UWE) involved no in person sessions at all so she went back the following weekend, for example. She doesn't have weeks of exams the same way other subjects do, and she has reading weeks when others don't! You will need to wait for her specific timetable I'm afraid.

Miaow!

There’s been a serious lack of people who can critically assess the media in the past few years

Bansheed · 06/06/2024 20:26

Thanks, not booking flights yet but she has a temp job and they wanted to know her availibility

and a media degree sadly won’t help on that front

crayfishyum · 07/06/2024 08:21

i too would very much reconsider spending tens of thousands of pounds on overseas fees for a media degree.

Bansheed · 07/06/2024 11:52

Cost is not a problem and we all measure value differently.

Different strokes, different folks.

Thank you to those PP who answered my question, it was helpful and I appreciate that 😊
