Hi all

I'm considering changing from my BWM 2 series active tourer to a bigger car. There's only the three of us plus the dog usually but I'd like a bigger boot for camping trips.

What car do you drive and do you recommend it?

My Dad was always the one I'd ask for car advice but he recently passed away so thought I'd ask here sorry.

I'm really sorry to hear about your dad @Dinoswearunderpants

We have a BMW X3 (m sport, automatic) it was an upgrade from our tiny VW Golf when DD was born. It's great for space, very comfortable and drives really great. I especially like it for it's parking assist cameras (although I am sure.lots of other cars have this). My brother is very into his cars and it was thoroughly vetted and approved by him so I hope that is some reassurance for you that someone with knowledge of cars approved it.

Good luck on your search x

Hi, OP. You've no need to apologise. I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

I have an XC40. It might be good sized for your needs. Although an XC90 has much more boot space.

I have a Jaguar F-Pace. It's roomy and sporty and just lovely. Drives so nice! Good boot size, nice room in the back. We have 2 kids and does us well - but no prams now but it did well with my bugaboofox when my youngest was a baby

Dinoswearunderpants · 06/06/2024 13:16

You've all got such lovely cars!!! I was hoping to not spend too much money on a new one. I bought this one for £16k and already it's now only worth about £8-10k three years later.

I’m a mechanic and in the last few days have driven a VW T-Roc, a Volvo XC90, a Porsche Macan, a VW golf estate, and a Range Rover. The XC90, T-Roc and Golf were all fantastic little cars. VWs I find to be very reliable x

We have had a couple of Skoda estates and a Ford Mondeo estate. I would recommend both.

BlueChampagne · 06/06/2024 13:19

Skoda Octavia

Abzs · 06/06/2024 13:20

Skoda Superb. Our third Skoda. Ginormous boot. We had an Octavia first, also a big boot. I like them because they adjust for short people. My knees don't touch the steering wheel, nor my head the windscreen.

SquigglePigs · 06/06/2024 13:23

Sorry about your Dad.

We have a 2018 Prius, bought to replace our Golf that we'd had for years. I really like it. It's a nice smooth drive, good size internal space (without feeling enormous to park) and good mpg as it's a hybrid.

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/06/2024 13:23

Discovery Sport. The seats are comfy. I can’t think of anything else to say about it that’s positive. I used to have a Tiguan when we lived in the US and that was great but there were no AWD petrol ones available new in stock when I was last car shopping so alas couldn’t get another one.

maximist · 06/06/2024 13:41

I bought a 68 plate Vauxhall Mokka last year for £12k and I love it. It's very easy to drive and has loads of space (I often carry very large loads, and they go in with ease).

Lanawashington · 06/06/2024 13:43

We've got a Ford Kuga and absolutely love it

Frosty1000 · 06/06/2024 13:53

Cx5 here, diesel one not petrol and it's a great drive.

Jorvik1978 · 06/06/2024 13:56

Skoda Octavia, Skoda Superb or VW Passat (the estate versions) would be my suggestion. We've had all three and rate all of them.

WickWood · 06/06/2024 14:00

E-Pace Jaguar here. Very roomy and a nice car!

OrlandointheWilderness · 06/06/2024 14:02

Land Rover Freelander here. Bloody love my car! Comfy, roomy, tows well.

GreenFairies · 06/06/2024 14:03

Volvo XC60. Volvo cars are one of the safest around so that swayed our decision.

Gardencentrevoucher · 06/06/2024 14:11

Skoda Kodiaq. Massive boot, and good headroom. Ours is petrol AWD and has an off road option which we use when going fishing/down farm tracks. We live in the Highlands and its great in snow and rain but also very comfy for motorways. Its 6 years old now and (touch wood) not had any issues with it. My sister also got one after seeing how nice ours was!

heartbrokenof · 06/06/2024 14:20

Skoda superb

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 06/06/2024 14:22

Another Volvo fan here. I have an XC60.

321Backintheroom · 06/06/2024 14:27

OP I drive the Mercedes B class which I suppose is the equivalent of what you drive . The Mercedes does have a 50 litre bigger boot capacity though , I’ve found it a great car and been more than adequate for boot space when going on camping trips and great space in the rear seats etc

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 06/06/2024 14:34

We drive a 2011 Grand C-Max and a 2021 Honda Jazz.
The Grand C-Max has just turned 120,000 miles and still going strong. It's a good size, reliable and drives well. Compared to a BMW it's less luxurious but very practical.
The Jazz probably isn't a dog car as the boot isn't that big.

Thank you so much. My dad was a mechanic so it's great to hear your perspective too.

Does anyone have a RR Velar or are they uninsurable?

MuseKira · 06/06/2024 14:48

We bought our first Volvo last year (XC40) - we absolutely love it. Wish we'd started buying Volvo years ago!
