I've not had a good day, been feeling generally quite anxious. Decided to go to bed. Turn on bedroom light and see one of those really big, black spiders crawling close to my bed! Dp has removed it but it was in a really awkward place and could have easily ran to hide.

Its really shook me up. I really needed to just unwind and get some sleep.

Please can someone reassure me. How do you cope when you see the big ones?

To be fair we expect these spiders around August as we live next to a field and when it's cut we get them come in 😖 but this is so early.

I don't think my nerves can handle months of this. I'm so on edge now and can't even relax in my own bed.

You have my sympathy OP. The after effects of seeing one can be really bad. There's a chemical spray called Indorex, it's designed for fleas but kills everything in a room including spiders. You spray the room, leave it a couple of hours, then open the window to air. It goes on working for months. Get someone else to vacuum the room for you after spraying in case there's a dead one. Alternatively some people recommend camphor or cedar essential oil around the room to keep them out.

Why is the solution to kills things? Spiders and insects are important.

The spider was removed. The problem was sorted 🤷‍♀️

I had arachnophobia for years. It was so bad I stopped using my bathroom for a couple of weeks when there was a spider there. I. Had a wash down at the kitchen sink instead!
When I moved in with DH I got him to deal with spiders. I just wanted him to put them outside but instead he'd kill them! As much as I feared spiders I couldn't bear to see them squashed.
So I very slowly started dealing with them myself, using the glass and card method. At first it took me ages to get close enough to put a glass over them - like 40 minutes. Then I'd be too scared to pick the glass up. But over time it got easier and easier. Now I can easily go up to the biggest spider of all, put a glass on, release outside - all in about 30 seconds.
What I'm saying is, you can overcome the fear! You can change your thinking.

Absolutely understand this - I'm exactly the same.

Don't kill them. They are just creatures finding a way to live. Just do what you've been doing and put them outside.

I managed to fall asleep but every time I woke up I would search the walls. It sounds silly but I expect the big ones around august/ September time so this feels too early for me to be seeing them. I used to think I had a safety window up until those months.

I'm reluctant to use the indorex. I have heard it's effective but I'm worried what it might do to our health. I have asthma so would rather avoid chemicals.

Unfortunately, it gets to a point where they do have to be killed. I hate to think of anything being killed but i know that if they're popped outside, they come back in.

I think they are referred to as house spiders, are they harmful? I've heard not but then also seen the bites they can make!

No they are not harmful, or interested in you. They look for insects, eat and mate and that's about it. They won't come back in if you put them somewhere they can feel safe- garage, shed, greenhouse, outside store. . We had one lived in our garage .

While I can absolutely sympathise, please don't kill them. I was only fearful of them after I found out my dad was scared shitless of them! My brother and I used to race them in our shared room when I was younger! Apparently they don't like the smell of cinnamon and don't like horse chestnuts (not sure if it is the season). Read up on things that put them off in the first place.

Poor spiders. Please don’t kill them. I’m sorry you have such a phobia but it is unwarranted (rationally). They won’t hurt you. Hope you sleep better tonight.

I completely agree with you about not killing things and the importance of insects. But people don't really understand what an extreme phobia is like. It's not rational, and nothing to do with whether spiders are harmless or not. It is pure terror.
Personally I'm OK to enter a room if know the spider has been removed, but I know people who won't go in there for fear it is still there. I only mentioned Indorex because after using it on a cat flea infestation, I noticed that it also killed spiders.
