How To Talk To Other Parents At School

Long time viewer, first post.

I am introverted and find it hard in general to make conversation and chat. I’m looking for advice and ideas please on how to talk to other parents at school drop off and pick up, and often bump in to parents when walking to and from school.

I find it quite stressful and don’t know what to say. Everyone is very welcoming but I have what I feel is bland generic boring chat .. how was their day, did they have a good half term break/ or how far off half term is, do they have a club run tonight etc.?

For those of you who find socialising a little more easy, what conversations do you start? What questions do you ask people? I appreciate any advice on how to be more natural and fun to speak with.

thank you!!

Maybe talking about yourself more or make follow up comments to things they have said.

E.g.
"How was your half term?"
"It was OK. We took the kids swimming"
"Ooh we haven't been swimming for a while. Do you go to [swimming baths]? I used to love it there as child. Do they still have XYZ?"

The variables are endless but I think the key is to expand on questions asked/answered. There's then a natural build up of getting to know the person outside of small talk. You soon might learn they have a hob interview coming up that you could ask about, or they're pregnant, etc.

Try not to ask a list of questions and talk about yourself.

@BippityBopper thank you so so much. I really appreciate that. That has really helped me and I’ve read it over a few times to let it sink in. Hopefully I’ll put it into practice tomorrow.
