Hot tubs, the logistics

I've never even considered one. Seen a lot of 'chav ' references to them on here too🤣
I've been in one once, friend of a friend's house.
Other than that, I know nothing about them
Same friend of a friend is selling hers very cheap and has asked if I want it.
I don't know if I want it.

Does anyone have one? Know about them?

Are they a lot of maintainence? Expensive? Fiddly? Do they get algae in them? Are they as unhygienic as everyone says?
What do they 'run' off and bow?
I don't know anyone who has one and don't want to ask her!

I live on my own so would usually be only me to deal with it.

How, not Bow.

They plug into an outside power socket. They require a lot of maintenance.
Do you mean a hard shell one or lazy spa? Very different IMO

MaryMack · 05/06/2024 18:54

Is it an inflatable one? I wouldn't bother. They run off electricity and can be expensive. Unless it's a luxury you really want, then steer clear.

Is it a hard shell type or inflatable?

They do take a bit of maintenance as you have to check the water daily and regularly add chemicals to keep them clean. It's quite easy to get the hang of though.

Cost wise, I think we worked out ours was £1 a day roughly to run. We only have it fully turned up when we know we're going to use it. We empty it between Oct-May to keep costs down.

We love ours though. Would definitely recommend as long as you think you'll use it.

Friend has not used his for 2 years, it’s being taken out - electricity heating cost was £100 per month.

DatingDinosaur · 05/06/2024 19:44

I can't get past a colleague calling them 'jizz tubs'. Recoil at the thought of ever using one, never mind owning one, ever since Confused

Roselilly36 · 05/06/2024 19:48

We have a lay z spa, well worth the money, chemicals are easy to manage once you get the hang of it. We don’t worry about the cost to run, as we have solar and only use it in the summer. Really helps my pain. Would recommend.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/06/2024 19:51

Someone on here years ago called them “heated sex ponds”.

DrFoxtrot · 05/06/2024 19:55

I loved my chavvy hot tub before the pump/ filter died 😭. I don't think it required that much maintenance. I checked it every couple of days and it was easy to add chlorine. It was much more work looking after a sourdough starter 😂.

Teabelly71 · 05/06/2024 20:05

I did loads and loads of research on every type of hot tub before getting one. We opted for one that is so simple to use and doesn’t require any chlorine. It’s a hybrid one, ie it has a 13 amp plug for the lights and the jets and bubbles but the heat comes from an integrated log burner. The liner is fibreglass and is easy to clean. Basically once filled the water lasts for a week with the addition of a packet of silver nitrate powder. Then once emptied I clean it in the same way I would for a bath. We have a hot water tap outside so we fill using the hot water from the house and finish with the log burner. It takes a bit of planning but it’s a nice ritual in its own way and it’s lovely listening to the logs crackle away, especially in winter. The biggest cost for us is the actual water , which is about £4 per fill.

@Teabelly71

A hot tub AND a log burner?

You're brave saying that on here! 😂

Would you have a link for that type please?

SpikyCoconut · 05/06/2024 22:33

Definitely a hard shell type.

I think this will be a no, then! I have enough to worry/think about without having to attend to a tub of water in my garden all the time!

Thank you all Smile I know some people love them and good for them! But I don't think they're for me.

Also, the one and only time I did go in one, my skin was burnt afterwards. Chlorine, I assumed at the time-not badly, a little like mild sunburn.

I also had another rather painful symptom that I won't go into detail about. Let's just say 'Sahara desert' and a certain body part that (in slang) rhymes with 'tinge'.

But I think they'd put too much detergent in.

I have one . I hate the chav references to them and see it as jealousy. It is the norm in some parts of the world to have them. Mine is a hard shell . But beware they do cost a lot to run. Mine puts around £200 a month on the electricity and if we go wild the bubbles around another £100 a month. Some others might be cheaper to run though

It was more likely to have been the pH balance of the water that was wrong and caused an issue for your skin (acid/alkaline) and not the chlorine. You have to use a whole variety of chemicals in them to get the water right, and it needs to have the filter cleaned or changed fairly often too.

If not done properly you can catch germs from them, including Legionnaires Disease.
