The Lake District is far more beautiful IMO, but very busy. You can walk all day in Northumberland and not see a soul.

TheDandyLion · 05/06/2024 18:21

Northumberland. It's much quieter.

PragmaticDramatic · 05/06/2024 18:21

Lakes.

CwmYoy · 05/06/2024 18:22

Northumberland by miles. Unspoilt, not too crowded, lovely people.

Bankholidayhelp · 05/06/2024 18:22

Northumberland

Temporaryname158 · 05/06/2024 18:22

Northumberland, a lot less rain than the lakes and a lot of the main tourist spots in the Lakes are heaving tourist honeypots (though remoter places are lovely!

namechangedforthis2024 · 05/06/2024 18:22

I prefer Northumberland as popular spots in the Lakes so busy. Lakes also much more expensive imo.

Also I feel the towns have a touristy vibe and lack charm whereas Northumberland has loads of lovely and authentic towns and villages.

Scenery stunning in both but Lakes edges it for views.

I love a beach though and fab option in Northumberland.

Octavia64 · 05/06/2024 18:23

They're very different places.

Personally Northumberland as the lakes get insanely crowded especially in summer.

The wild swimming is pretty good in both.

Saucery · 05/06/2024 18:24

Northumberland, it reminds me of what the Lakes used to be like when I was a child, before it became extremely popular to the point of unpleasantness.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 05/06/2024 18:24

Northumberland. Just prefer it. Maybe more history?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 05/06/2024 18:25

Northumberland. There's loads to do. Lovely beaches, castles, stately homes as well as excellent walking.

MuseKira · 05/06/2024 18:25

I always prefer the Lake District. Lots of places to go, lots of lovely walks if you avoid the 2 or 3 main tourist honeypots. The Northern and Western areas of the Lake District are very similar to Northumberland in terms of being pretty quiet even in peak season.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/06/2024 18:25

Lake District by miles. I live on the edge of it. People say it's crowded with tourists, but it's a big place and actually only a small bit of it ever gets busy. If you go to Ambleside on a sunny bank holiday, you're asking for trouble!

DaffydownClock · 05/06/2024 18:26

Northumberland but the Lake District is lovely if you head over to the far side.

Runningupthecurtains · 05/06/2024 18:30

Northumberland - the lakes are beautiful but Northumberland has more variety - fantastic beaches, castles, Roman history as well as the walking/hiking in the national park/Kielder.

Gingerlygreen · 05/06/2024 18:32

Depends what you're looking for, the Lakes is breathtaking but busier, Northumberland isn't as picturesque but has less people.

With the Lakes you can always find quiet spots, we last went on a very warm bank holiday, the roads were busy but once we'd reached our cottage we could head up the fells on foot and only saw a handful of people.

Littletreefrog · 05/06/2024 18:35

If you want touristy, very busy but very pretty go to the Lakes. If you want beautiful, vast empty beaches and quiet go to Northumberland.

RedRosie · 05/06/2024 18:39

Northumberland is glorious. Don't tell everyone!
The Lakes of course, are lovely. But Northumberland every time for me. The people and the beaches are second to none.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 05/06/2024 18:43

The lakes for the drama of the landscape, the big fells and the lakes. Also I love fell walking, starting at the bottom and ending up on a defined summit with fabulous views.

Northumberland for wild and wonderful beaches, puffin trips, Lindisfarne, Castles, history, wonderful scenery, isolation.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 05/06/2024 18:48

It depends what you want to do. It isn’t ‘touristy’ on the summit of Grasmoor or Red Pike or High Stile, or High Street or even the favourites such as Bowfell or the Langdale Pikes.

The towns are busy, but not over run with crass touristy stuff. Loads of outdoor shops, some gift shops, coffee shops…

DiddyEckerslike · 05/06/2024 18:50

Northumberland for sure - the weather is much better (all the rain gets dropped on the Lakes on the way over) and the scenery is lovely

LuluBlakey1 · 05/06/2024 18:53

They are very different but Northumberland is stunning. It has the most beautiful beaches and they are often empty even in summer. It's a county of varied atmosphere:
The North Pennines in the south-west is striking, hilly, very rural and in places wild and bleak but beautiful- small villages, tiny lanes, patchwork fields, stone walls and soaring moorlands and it tips over into Cumbria.
The Tyne valley is lovely from the sources of the Tyne in the west high moorlands down through Hexham and Corbridge market towns with their early Christian and Roman history, alongside Hadrian's wall down to Tynemouth and the North sea- seaside resorts of Whitley Bay, Cullercoats fishing village, St Mary's island.
There's Kielder reservoirs in the west near the border with Scotland.
The North Northumberland coast is lovely -Seahouses, Bamburgh, Budle Bay, Ross, The Farne Islands, Holy Island, Berwick. You can walk all day and see dolphins, seals, birds, stunningly beautiful beaches and big skies and rarely a person. Cheswick beach is somewhere I have gone since being a child and is almost always empty.
The border from east to west with Scotland is full of beautiful towns and villages both sides.

I could praise Northumberland all day but we try to keep it a bit of a secret or people will start coming up here.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 05/06/2024 21:55

No Northumberland is awful, you won’t like it, don’t go. 😏
Seriously all those people saying Northumberland isn’t touristy, try going to Beadnall or Bamborough. I know someone in the first and she says most of the cottages are now holiday lets. Same as the Bamborough Main Street, all honey pot shops and expensive cafes. Still stunning though.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/06/2024 21:57

I live in Northumberland and you can't beat it for seclusion and wonder beaches (and castles).

I think the Lakes is more beautiful but some places are so busy it puts me off. You do see lots of lovely dogs though.
