Terraced housing and sex

Anyone willing to share whether they can hear their neighbours having sex? I have namechanged for this for obvious reasons but I have been on mumsnet for many years!

DH and I have a pretty decent sex life, and I'm not going to lie and say that when we are at home alone I don't hold back. I mean, I start off thinking, 'I hope the neighbours don't hear us', but when the going gets good I have issues not vocalising it GrinBlush.

My main fear is that we live in a terraced house, it's an old one so we hear occasional noise from the kids next door but mainly nothing. Our bedrooms don't back onto each other which was a deliberate choice.

Do I owe them a bottle of wine, and need to wear a paper bag over my head when I go outside?!

Take them a bottle of wine because you have loud sex ? Cringe Just be quiet. Ridiculous

MogHog · 05/06/2024 07:01

I work from home in the back bedroom which is over the alley and shared with our middle neighbour.
I can hear them having sex whilst I'm working but it's not too bad.
The last lot however sounded like she was putting on a performance several times a day and it was so loud I had to move my office just in case anyone heard it on a work call/meeting.
Tbh we have a pretty active sex life but it just made me laugh and feel sorry for her as to make that much racket he must of needed a lot of encouragement 🤣

Yeah I always think if you dont scream while having an orgasm while masturbasting there's no need to scream whilst having sex. Probably not even having an orgasm it's just performative 😂

Sex feels wildly different though 🤷🏻‍♀️ They arent comparable.

MaryBeardsShoes · 05/06/2024 07:08

I’ve lived in a lot of different places and heard neighbours having sex. Always sounds so performative. Bit nasty to inflict it on others.

Cadela · 04/06/2024 21:49

I live in a terraced and yes I can hear my neighbours both sides and one down (but they are wildly loud and vile) have sex.

Tbf I don’t mind hearing beds knocking on walls, I do mind hearing people scream. No one screams during an orgasm, so just don’t fake it 😂

Had one have you?

😁

@Shiningout missing the point entirely but masterbasting sounds like fun Grin. Brings a turkey baster to mind! GrinGrinGrin

Ffs bloody autocorrect 😂😂😂😂😭

But I'm not talking about being vocal, I'm talking about women who literally scream the house down during sex or wail like they are in pain the whole time, I struggle to believe they are doing it for any other reason than to perform, it's just not necessary to be screaming so neighbours can hear.

Speaking purely from my experience of one ex-boyfriend, it kept me awake through the tedium.

ObliviousCoalmine · 05/06/2024 13:49

I can hear my neighbour fake a screaming orgasm at 11.30pm most nights. I try not to look either of them in the eye.

gestroopd · 05/06/2024 22:18

OP the reason you don't hear your neighbours could be because they hear you, so keep the noise down themselves. You then think you can't be heard as you hear nothing...

Branleuse · 05/06/2024 22:25

I don't think ive really heard the neighbours having sex in any place ive lived.
I tend to put loud music on for sex these days, as i like to be able to be noisy if i feel like it

QuickDraining · 05/06/2024 22:40

It's either the pigeons on the chimney, or a little slap and tickle around 5am. I personally don't mind sex noises. At least it's happy. Far preferable to shouting arguments.

Pallisers · 05/06/2024 22:46

For the 22 years between having my first and my youngest going to university, we had very quiet sex at home. It was very nice. Then when we were alone in the house we discovered making a bit of noise - it is so so much better. No we don't do full-throated screams but we do make noise, give a bit of a shriek at the critical moment etc.

Does no one else find their orgasm better if they can make some noise when having it?

And no, I don't have the same need to make noise if masturbating but orgasms through masturbation, while nice, aren't the same to me as ones through sex with another person.

But to answer the OP, if I thought my neighbours could hear, then I wouldn't. no one needs to hear that.

igomeow · 05/06/2024 22:46

I live in a terraced house and my neighbour has become a bloody nightmare, new boyfriend and it's like living next door to Pornhub.. I don't believe anyone enjoys sex that much, the screaming sex sounds are ridiculous.

CaribouCarafe · 05/06/2024 23:17

I was nervous about this when we bought our midterrace so installed sound proofing insulation on our bedroom party wall and replastered. Haven't heard anything from our neighbours and they claim they hear nothing from our side either (but who knows if they're telling the truth!)

DonnaHadDee · 09/06/2024 09:18

Never lived in a terrace house, but I've experienced this. Even though hired during the remote working days, attendance is now required in the office a few days per week, and with a longer commute I stay in an airbnb 2 nights per week. It's a nice/quaint place, a renovated older build and they have onsite storage so I can even leave a few things there if needed.

But I've encountered the noise issues you mention. In general it's nice and quiet, but my goodness some of the people!

Clawedino · 09/06/2024 09:20

We live in a 70s build mid terrace and don't hear anything, apart from the occasional sneeze or DIY from one side. Been here 9 years.
Having said that, we are the most likely to make a noise, as we're a young couple with a child. On one side we had an elderly man who passed last year and the other side is an old couple! It will be interesting to see if we hear anything when the vacant one sells if it is another young family like us!

SPsmama · 09/06/2024 09:30

I'm not in a terrace but a semi and our bedrooms are attached. I hear their tv, I hear them walking up and down the stairs, doors etc but I've never heard them having sex and I assume them us. We're both pregnant so it's definitely happening on both sides 🤣

ToBeOrNotToBee · 09/06/2024 09:34

I live in a flat with a neighbour to the side (his bedroom is attached to my front room) a neighbour below and one above.
Below, never heard him.
My side neighbour, the man goes on for hours. Like honestly, hours. I'm impressed.
Upstairs, I can hear the bed knocking but mercifully it is over within seconds. Poor man and poor her, I've never heard her enjoy it. Must be so boring.
I'm sure they've heard me, and I really don't care. We're all adults.

I actually have before lol

I’ve lived in a terrace next door to neighbours who used to have a lot of loud sex.

Yeah i think it adds to the experience massively if you let yourself be a bit noisy.

Its like laughing or sneezing or crying or even getting a fright. These are all moments where some people cant help making a noise and others dont.

Being noisy during sex doesn't make it performative or fake.

LlynTegid · 09/06/2024 17:51

OP, if you are being real and not fake (as some of those described seem to be) then don't worry.

ThreeAmingos · 09/06/2024 18:50

I honestly can't inside what screaming sounds like. Being vocal is one thing, up to you if you're embarrassed by it, or want to be considerate of other neighbours/families. Screaming? Too much.
