How often do you go on holiday as a family?

Used to be a ‘big’ holiday abroad yearly with a mini break in between - nowadays we’d be lucky to even manage a night or two away in the UK with the cost of living crisis 😞

hjposlop · 04/06/2024 11:29

As a family usually one holiday abroad a year, some weekend breaks too. This year we are doing 2 x shorter abroad breaks due to time constraints. DH and I usually get away together for a week if not every year, at least every other year.

elQuintoConyo · 04/06/2024 11:42

A week camping.
A long weekend city trip.
10 days foreign EU holiday.

But all on the absolute cheap, we will drive or take a high-speed train (paying for tickets in advance when they first release them). The foreign holiday is a drive away and to my best friend`s house!

We are going away for a long weekend just up to the mountains around the time of our local festival, as the dog freaks out at the fireworks and general bangers they set off. It is off-season, so renting an apartment will be cheaper.

We are a family of three with a pre-teen.

If we go back to the UK, I take DD alone - ryanair flights, minimim luggage, stay with family.

One week abroad
One night or one weekend break at home

CeeJay81 · 04/06/2024 11:51

One family holiday a year (alternating between a Abroad and UK, would love abroad every year but finances don't allow).

Plus another weekend away, either at family members or 2 to 3 nights somewhere cheap.

MightyGoldBear · 04/06/2024 12:10

One long weekend UK cheaper (haven type) holiday a year. Never been able to go abroad or do longer. Its always been out of reach for us and now cost of living it's definitely way out of reach.

I'm hoping at some point as the children get older we might be able to go abroad even if its just one parent one child and take turns. But we would have to forgo any holiday one year to get passports done first.

theeyeofdoe · 04/06/2024 12:14

We usually go away for 2 week long family holidays - we alternative EU with long haul now the kids are older (we tended to do UK when they were little). Then I/DH go aways with the kids individually fora weekend each.

Ithinktomyselfwhatawonderfulworld · 04/06/2024 12:17

Abroad every other year, ideally center parcs in the year in between.
We also try and do a couple of short night breaks at theme parks as often as we can

loveulotslikejellytots · 04/06/2024 12:19

We do Centre Parcs once a year, during school time, can't afford school holidays (with the fines changing we possibly won't be doing this any more). That's usually around November time.

Then the last few years we've gone to our friends caravan in Hampshire for a week in the school summer holidays. It's Ona lovey park with amazing pools and loads to do.

We've not been abroad since before covid, not sure we can afford to if I'm honest. We're hoping to go next year maybe to Portugal or Turkey but as quick as we save money, the prices seem to go up.

DH and I usually go away for one or two nights a year alone for our birthdays/anniversary.

Surely a holiday isn’t only costing the price of a few passports? If you’re that hard up I doubt an abroad holiday is in budget at all.

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/06/2024 12:24

Alternate 3 weeks with family in America with 2 weeks usually Europe each summer.

Couple of short breaks usually May and October half term., UK or Ireland.

GameOfJones · 04/06/2024 12:29

We have a family holiday twice a year. Normally a week in the summer holidays, alternating between in the UK and abroad. If it's one of the years we are in the UK we tend to go away with other family members and stay in a house all together to keep the cost down.

Then we normally do a Monday to Friday caravan holiday in the UK at Easter or one of the school half terms.

My parents live a long way away from us, but still in the UK. We go to visit them twice a year for a long weekend and fortunately they have the space for us to stay so it's only really petrol money and some food. DH and I don't really view it as a holiday but DDs definitely do which is nice.

TealDog · 04/06/2024 12:48

We have a camper van so we do weekends away quite frequently and then usually 7-10 days camping in the UK in the summer. We’ll start going abroad when the DC are a bit older.

edwinbear · 04/06/2024 12:59

We do 2 weeks abroad in the summer and one or two trips to the south coast where in laws live (luckily they have space for us to stay with them). DS competes in his sport at quite a high level so usually 4-5 trips a year where we need to travel and stay in hotels - fun as they are, I don't really count them as holidays, although they cost a fortune. We used to do a lot more, weekend breaks, bank holiday weekends etc but they've had to be cut out due to the expense.

stackhead · 04/06/2024 13:01

1 or 2 weeks (separate) in Spain at my parents house (so just flights and food) and then usually 1 week away in the UK to a haven type place. Maybe a weekend at butlins with friends (sharing an apartment).

Pushing the boat out this year with Disneyland Paris for DD before DD2 arrives and puts hold on any big holiday expenses for a few years.

Lesina · 04/06/2024 13:21

A week or two in Croatia every year as a family plus a week or so in the U.K. plus a few long weekends in the U.K. / France throughout the year. Every second year we also do a trip to Florida. I then usually have a week away with my friend and 10 days in Thailand with my partner. I like going away :)

mindutopia · 04/06/2024 14:37

All of us, sometimes once a year but not always (we have a dog and a business and a farm, so quite often we go away separately with the dc so someone is home to deal with everything that needs dealing with). This is almost always in the UK - either somewhere in the south west or in Wales as those are close by.

But then we do take 1-3 holidays just one of us with the dc every year. It could be just a weekend city break or it could be longer. I'm taking one dc to Spain next month. And then dh is taking the other to France with family in August.

We are definitely more low key camping and city breaks than 2 weeks AI on the beach or Disney though.

SpringBunnies · 04/06/2024 14:42

Twice a year abroad. We didn't go overseas during Covid, and did a lot of UK trips instead. DC1 is a teen now, and I can already see the end of family holidays together.

fourelementary · 04/06/2024 12:20

Haven holidays are around £180-£360 obviously you can spend more. So 5 passports would be somewhere around there. We would have to save up for longer to go abroad/eu type city break and perhaps only two of us at a time.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 04/06/2024 14:53

2-3 times a year abroad, once or twice for a long weekend UK

jannepp · 04/06/2024 15:14

Usually one holiday abroad, then about 4 short UK breaks, 2-3 nights each. Plus one trip to see PILs in the US - I don't see it as a holiday. Always travel as a family with all 4 of us.
