My neighbours thought it was me singing and I lied and said it was

What on earth do I do?

I played this song whilst I was in the bath. Phone died and so it was the only one to play and cut off just before the end

I went to put something in my boot and my neighbour and her DD came out and said ''it was you! You're amazing''

I had no idea what they were on about Blush and sort of just smiled and her daughter said I had an amazing voice

I said 'me? I can't sing'. I didn't realise they had mistaken me for the music playing

She said yes, you're amazing. And my neighbour said 'absolutely amazing, yes. Are you in a choir?'

I said no. She said I should be and there's a few around here. I said I didn't have time

She said I sounded so amazing and what was the name of the song? Open my eyes Lord or something?

It suddenly clicked and I said 'oh, just something I made up'.

She then asked if I'd sing for her at her 60th. I said I might be able to if I could get childcare.

  1. They are lovely, friendly and kind neighbours. I feel AWFUL for lying and they're going to find out. How can I live this down?
  1. Do I confess?
  1. How could they have mistaken me for something that sounds like it's come from a recording video and a microphone?
  1. I promise, I am not a liar, usually! I have terrible memory so would be embarrassed to slip up! And I am very nervous and feel so awful. Why oh why did I string these lies together?

Brilliant 😁

Many of these suggestions will only excuse you from the 60th birthday celebration. There will be other occasions.
You need to move house.

Omg @messimeringue I'm sorry but I'm pissing myself. I have no solution for you

Abitorangelooking · 06/06/2024 20:28

Just say you are too shy to sing in public. You get nervous and sound terrible. You can only sing when no one is listening.

frozendaisy · 06/06/2024 20:42

Say sorry you were singing ALONG but the record was much louder and now thinking about it that must have been what they heard.

Offer to play record again "just to check" and then humbly insist that you could never reach the perfection of "insert real singer's name here" and in all honesty you would spoil their party if you attempted a show but are happy to pass on song details they can ask a professional singer to sing on the big day.

Lying got you into this tangle
Lying will get you out

frozendaisy · 06/06/2024 20:43

It is very very funny though
No one expects to be asked to put on a show from being overheard in the bath
It did escalate quickly OP!

NoItsStillNighttimeDarling · 06/06/2024 20:45

Oh god OP this needs to go in classics I'm howling 😂

seven201 · 06/06/2024 22:26

Hahaha! I can totally imagine this happening. I think you need to confess. Maybe take her some flowers as an apology and explain you just don't know how you ended up caught up in a lie like that and laugh at yourself and hope she joins in.

Fraaahnces · 07/06/2024 02:56

Just tell her you have paralyzingly crippling performance anxiety and that is why you “no longer perform.” If she pushes, look terribly sad and say, “I’m sorry. I can’t talk about it either. It’s far too painful. I wish you’d never heard me, but I’m going to have to make things clear that I will never sing publically again.”
(Tbf, this is actually my real story, so feel free to use it.)
