First class rail ticket - what's the point??

Does anyone know the reason why that If you book a Frist class rail ticket you are not guaranteed a seat if it's busy? What's the point of paying extra and having to stand all the way.
I can see the point if it's an emergency, like previous trains cancelled etc, but being able to pay the difference but not get any benefit seems crazy

This isn’t the case, unless you are booking last minute. I wouldn’t book a cheap standard seat unless I had a seat reservation.

Surely it depends on the train.

You can't book seats on some trains (either first or second class).

But you get a better class of standing.
