How do you clean your retainers?

Lettucelet · 03/06/2024 11:55

Has anyone used a sonic dental pod? I asked my dentist about them and she hadn’t heard of them but said she would be interested in the feedback if I bought one.

i currently used nappy sterilising fluid as that is what my dentist recommended.

what does everyone else use? Milton? Denture tablets? And are your retainers opaque with use?

DD has always used Retainer Brite for her Invisalign + retainers as recommended by her orthodontist. Never any issues with discolouration

PitterPatter3 · 03/06/2024 11:59

I used to have Invisalign and just brushed them with toothpaste and a toothbrush.

MabelMaybe · 03/06/2024 12:04

We use Retainer Brite. DS was told that he "had" to use that brand. I'm eyeing up the Sterident in our cupboard to clean flasks though, because RB is £8 a pack from the orthodontist.

DD uses Retainer Brite in an unbranded ultrasonic retainer cleaner (both supplied by her orthodontist). She does this twice a week and it takes 15 minutes each time. In addition to the above, she cleans her retainers each night with a toothbrush (no toothpaste - she was advised that toothpaste would scratch her retainers).

Her retainers are still clear and colourless.

I use steradent.

Lettucelet · 03/06/2024 12:25

Thanks.

Another dentist told me to use toothpaste for my retainers that were used when I bleached my teeth!

I rinse my retainer in hot water every morning and soak it once a week in Steradent.

catlovingdoctor · 03/06/2024 12:58

I use a pod and it keeps them fresh and much cleaner than just the tablets. Well worth the £60 outlay.

PartnersInCrime · 03/06/2024 13:00

Retainer bright - cheaper on Amazon than from the dentist.

A very bad idea unless you want your retainer to become misshapen.

I would never use hot water it can impact the shape

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/06/2024 13:06

When I say hot water I mean from the tap not the kettle. The kind of hot I would wash my hands in.

Milton and curaprox cleaner

siameselife · 03/06/2024 13:10

DS uses a sonic cleaner and water. It seems to be working well.

burnoutbabe · 03/06/2024 13:15

Change every 2 weeks so use a poligrip external appliance cleaner I got from boots.

Seems better than the bright one I got off Amazon.

Tablet in warm water for 5 mins.

Brief brush with toothbrush under tap every time I put back in.

buffyslayer · 03/06/2024 13:17

I clean it with unscented soap and warm water then use a fresh guard tablet

Disclaimer I am only using the fresh guard as the chemist had 20 boxes reduced to 10p each Grin so I bought the lot

HesterLee · 03/06/2024 13:18

I so want to get a sonic cleaning pod but they seem to be really expensive. Can anyone recommend one at a decent price?

I brush my retainers morning and night using clear liquid soap (to avoid the scratching toothpaste can cause) and give them a soak weekly using "Retainer Fresh" tablets.

Sera1989 · 03/06/2024 13:37

I use denture cleaner and brush with toothpaste every day. I'm surprised people say they only use denture cleaner twice a week! If I didn't use that and toothpaste mine would be so grim. However, my retainers are now quite old and need replacing and I sleep with my mouth open so I think that makes them more gross. Due to get new retainers soon so I'd be considering a sonic cleaner to keep them fresh. Is retainer brite better than denture cleaner and why?

PuppetQueen · 03/06/2024 15:48

My DD has this one. It seems to work well.

I use a zima dental sonicator pod. It's good, retainers were getting a bit discoloured before but they're back to clear again now.
