Small gifts for friend to use on flight

TwigTheWonderKid · 02/06/2024 11:08

My lovely friend has been supporting me through my cancer treatment. She's off to visit her daughter in the US soon and I'd like to give her a small gift, or gifts, that she might find useful and spoiling on her flight.

Any suggestions?

Wishing you the best for your continued recovery.

Book or magazine
Tiny box of chocolate from a luxury brand, tiny as in two chocolates.
Travel sized hand cream, not coloured or scented unless you know her well
Comfort top socks

How about an airport lounge pass? Or an upgrade to Business class 😂

What's your budget? Noise-cancelling headphones, a really comfy eyemask/good earplugs. A hydrating facial mist of some kind - Neal's Yard, Clinique, Beauty Pie, Aesop, Mario Badescu (the rose one is lovely) - lots of different price points for this sort of thing, and they'll help her feel like less of a prune when she lands.

Earplugs.

Something small and light as if she's anything like me, her bag will be crammed full as it is!

Wishing you all the best for your ongoing treatment 💐

A really nice lip balm and hand cream won't go amiss, I'm always so, so dry on planes. Make sure they're travel size!

Some nice sweets or chocolates - my MIL always brings a little tin of posh fruit sweets, apparently they help stop your ears popping on take off and landing. I just like scoffing them.

If you feel like a little splurge a sleep mask maybe? The kind with built in headphones so she can just zonk out and snooze in silent, dark luxury. That'd be my idea of heaven on a plane! They're not too dear on Amazon, I got one for about £15.

A really good eye mask
A soft lightweight but cosy shawl/scarf
Lounge access
Cashmere socks

Luggage and hand allowance is so tight these days I really wouldn't choose something for the flight unless she doesn't have and you can afford a decent set if earphones or headphones so she doesn't have to use the airline basic set.

mitogoshi · 02/06/2024 11:19

In all honesty - dollars are better. Magazines, books, are quite personal and most own headphones (plus they give you free ones on long haul normally). Please don't give hand cream, always suggested on here yet I don't use and based on the dozens donated every time we have a raffle or tombola at work, nor does anyone else!

MILLYmo0se · 02/06/2024 11:20

If she the type to use it one of the fancy face masks the influencers all seem to use on flights so their skin isn't dehydrated or whatever

Rocknrollstar · 02/06/2024 11:21

Puzzle book?

Blueberrycreampie · 02/06/2024 11:22

The idea above of a lovely pashmina type wrap is great! It's light and can be used at other times. I had one with me on a flight back from Greece and the air steward complimented me on it as it's a lovely colour and has little flowers embroidered onto it!

Barleysugar86 · 02/06/2024 11:24

Honestly the only thing I'd go for is a nice puzzle book and pen. Space is a premium I wouldn't pack hand cream or socks or a face mask if you gave me them.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 02/06/2024 11:24

Personally I think eye masks, facial mists and ear plugs are a bit of a gamble. As a frequent flier I've had plenty of these as gifts and have never used any of them. I don't get on with them.

I think a lounge pass for the airport is a lovely idea assuming she's not already in business. A lovely scarf that can double up as a blanket for if the plane gets chilly could be nice. Or a book you think she would enjoy.

FeltCarrot · 02/06/2024 11:28

If you do go down the lip balm/hand cream route, make sure she knows before going through security (unless it’s those new scanners!)

ManilowBarry · 02/06/2024 11:18

I really love this but it would be no good on a plane. When you put it on it's quite sticky and doesn't absorb in straight away, that's why they recommend using last thing at night. The pot always gets a bit sticky too. I think on a plane it would be too inconvenient.

anyolddinosaur · 02/06/2024 11:38

Alpine earplugs. These are not for the noise, although they cut out some, but to protect your ears during descent. A luxury she might not buy for herself.
