Not your usual Mumsnet salad

Am doing a barbecue today but want a selection of nice sides.
Not just a bog standard bag of salad (will have one of those obviously)
Am happy to make a few sides as they will do for lunch in work the next few days.
Nothing with fish but otherwise any suggestions appreciated.
Any links to recipes that have worked for you would be a bonus

Homemade potato salad? The Jamie Oliver recipe or BBC good food with oil and white wine vinegar, so lovely warm

I know you said that not usual Mumsnet salads, but I love a salad with a barbecue, because I usually don’t want to fill up too much on the sides! Sabrina Ghayour’s Middle Eastern freekeh salad is my go to carby barbecue side. It’s so fresh and vibrant with the herbs and pomegranate, a bit substantial, is fine left out for a few hours and keeps well so you eat any leftovers over the next few days. I have the book which also includes 50g coriander, which I definitely think is worth adding. It’s worth noting that the portion is massive. I served half a portion as a barbecue side recently between five adults and there was still leftovers!

The Dishoom broccoli salad is one of the best side dish salads I’ve had more made. It’s fresh, crunchy, zingy, a bit spicy and totally different to a bag of leaves. It’s one where I’ve always been asked the recipe for.

I am disappointed this isn’t the famed Mumsnet massive salad.

anyway, I usually do a mix of quinoa, feta, roasted butternut squash, chopped flat leaf parsley (loads of this), chopped pistachios and lemon juice.

Cherry tomatoes quartered (if you can get the heritage different colours packs this can look impressive), cucumber in cubes (peel it first to look even nicer) shred some fresh basil, added pitted olives, put in a nice bowl, pretend you made effort.

if you go on the bbc good foods website there’s lots of salad ideas and vinaigrette recipes, I tend to keep vinaigrette on the side but that’s because my family are fussy.

Oh sorry, to the quinoa one, some pomegranate seeds on top looks and tastes nice.

Was at a BBQ yesterday and there was a watermelon, feta and mint salad and a fennel, rocket and orange salad with toasted almonds. Both were lovely.

I'd go for a Greek salad, watermelon and feta, or tabbouleh.

If it's a hot day where you are, as it is here, I'd avoid anything with cheese in (unless it's feta or halloumi. I'd also avoid anything with mayonnaise in like coleslaw or potato salad, especially if you make your own mayonnaise.

Roasted beetroot (not picked) with feta, walnuts, spinach and balsamic glaze. Yum.

Celery, apple & sultana salad - chop up, mix with a little mayo and stir in some sultanas. You do need to dry the chopped celery on kitchen paper before adding the mayo though.

protectthesmallones · 02/06/2024 12:54

I do a big Greek salad and a big bowl of home made slaw. That hits most spots.

WaltzingWaters · 02/06/2024 12:55

Mango salad - mango (nice juicy one!), tasty cherry tomatoes, green pepper, cucumber, avocado, fresh coriander and lime juice. So tasty and refreshing.

haddockfortea · 02/06/2024 12:56

American chop salad. You can use whatever you like in it, chop it all up small and mix together with some dressing.

WildFlowerBees · 02/06/2024 12:56

Hot honey halloumi with grilled peaches.

Herb salad, chopped mint, dill, coriander, basil, parsley. Rocket and spinach. Bean sprouts, thinly sliced radish and pomegranate seeds with a soy and ginger dressing.

My favourite and trusty standby is a panzanella (Italian tomato and stale bread salad).

I cut up about 2lbs of ripe tomatoes, some roasted red pepper, 1/4 of a red onion finely sliced and a few handfuls of basil.

Make the vinaigrette with 6 tablespoons each of olive oil and red wine vinegar, and crush a clove of raw garlic into it, and any tomato juice you've captured from the toms.

15 mins before serving, mix through a few slices of slightly stale crusty bread torn up into bitesize chunks (if you leave it sit in the sun for an hour while you get on with everything else, it'll harden up nicely).

The bread will soak up the dressing and if stale enough should keep its shape and not disintegrate into the salad. Add the basil right at the end.
