How much would you spend on alcohol on a day out?

Meeting a friend for drinks today in Durham
She asked how much money I was bringing ??(I was like well I haven't got specific money I'm just bringing my bank card but won't be spending more than £100)
She then said only £100
I thought just for drinks without any food that would be enough
I'm not spending more than £100 on drinks
Is this not a normal amount ?
I was thinking a couple of cocktails and a few gins won't be more than £100

Depends where you’re going in Durham, north road end you’ll be done with £50, champagne bar and the river walk side you’ll easy spend £100 in an afternoon.

EasilyDefined · 02/06/2024 10:30

Maybe £50? A couple of cocktails and a diet coke or two. I'm normally driving though so it would just be the soft drinks.

Onemorepenny · 02/06/2024 10:30

No more than £50 and cocktails around here are £12-15 easily. And I would definitely be eating so that's another £30-40.

Are you sure she wasn't hoping you'd bring more to cover her bill?

I think the most DP and I have spent in a day and evening out was in Edinburgh in which we had about 5 drinks each for £70. That was for both of us.

Yozzer87 · 02/06/2024 10:31

Last time I went out with a mate day drinking, we started in Wetherspoons, had bite to eat in there with our drinks, then we went round a few bars that were around the same price range, nowhere fancy. We bought rounds for each other and probably had about 13 drinks each. We got those cocktail pitchers and then had a few vodkas, combination of doubles and singles with mixers and we each spent about £90. If I'd bought a bottle of wine I'd have spent less, but I think with cocktails, lots of them are watered down and filled with ice so you can just keep drinking them without getting paralytic.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/06/2024 10:31

It is an odd question.

Surely you have planned what sort of day it will be then both mentally set your budgets accordingly.

I met some friends in a different city recently I probably spent about £70 - we had a three course set lunch and one drink each and then late afternoon went to a bar and each had four drinks each (gin cocktails).

As it was a two hour journey back by train we didn't intend on staying late.

If it was an evening affair with a bigger dinner or visit to a cocktail bar or club I probably would have spent more.

But £100 is a pretty hefty budget for just alcohol. I live in London and wouldn't budget anywhere near that for just a day/evening of drinking.

transformandriseup · 02/06/2024 10:33

I don't drink much but if it was a special occasion I suppose I would budget £30 for drinks but probably wouldn't spend that much to be honest.

treacledan71 · 02/06/2024 10:34

Depends where you go. I went out to city yesterday and spent 40.00 just a few hours . A cocktail was 11.00. When I went to wetherspoons a month ago and we ended up staying in there as was chilled for 4 hours I spent 20.00 and that was with food. A small glass of wine was only 1.50 on offer.

mrstea301 · 02/06/2024 10:34

A crowd of us were out yesterday and DH and I spent £95 on drinks and dinner between us, which I thought was fine!

25 years ago a tenner would have covered it. Now it's knocking on £50 and I'm not even tipsy. It's not just the price of drinks but I tend to find that those who say "I'll only have a coke / Peroni Zero" don't seem to understand that they're not given away by pubs for free. Quite the opposite, they're more expensive per ml than a pint. So I end up spending 50 sovs on a night out and I'm like great, I've had 3 pints. Hence I rarely bother anymore.

Edited

This is true, I got a pint of lemonade yesterday and it was more expensive than a small glass of wine!

CheeseWisely · 02/06/2024 10:35

I certainly have spent £100 on a day's drinking in the past, but I live in an expensive place to drink (London type prices).

Now I prefer to steer clear of cocktails because I just don't think they're worth the money, so a few nice glasses of wine interspersed with a few soft drinks over the afternoon, £50/£60 maybe without food?

I echo that I think it's an odd conversation for 2 adults to have ahead of going out though! Friends and I might say 'oh my god I spent so much last night!' but we'd never agree a budget in advance as we're all individuals and all drink different things / different amounts.

Portfun24 · 02/06/2024 10:35

I was out Friday and bought two wines, three gins and tonic and for colleagues a vodka and coke, jack Daniels and coke and a vodka and tonic and spent about £65

sleekcat · 02/06/2024 10:45

I wouldn't even spend half that but I'm not a big drinker and can't drink more than a couple of drinks in the day time whilst continuing to function!

Olika · 02/06/2024 10:48

Your friend asking you this is just weird.

Nothing,I don't drink 🤪

Same. £100 sounds a lot of money on drinks.

imjustalovemachine · 02/06/2024 11:02

@Prinnny yeah it's normally around champagne bar /slug and lettuce
There's a Spanish tapas bar and also the boathouse (not sure if it's still called that as I haven't been in ages )

I drink pints of beer so even in the Vic or the Station House I'd be pissed on £25 ;-)

treacledan71 · 02/06/2024 11:30

It's not like the old days either taking cash. Can pay by card most places now. Although hard to keep track.

Where are you eating and drinking in Edinburgh ? We would spend the best part of £200

FannyFifer · 02/06/2024 12:45

Depending where I'm going but could def spend around £100 if out for a whole day in Edinburgh or somewhere.
Cocktails maybe £10-£12
Vodka & Coke can be around £6-£7
Couple of shots maybe £5
Couple of soft drinks £3-£4
Adds up.
