DS 15 going bald - anything he/we can do?

GotoutoftheUKphew · 01/06/2024 18:06

So on top of everything else a teenager has to deal with, DS has a receding hairline.

I will take him anywhere, do anything if it’s worth it. Or is it just genes?

Thanks for any advice/opinions.

2 things can help and even reverse hair loss:

Minoxidil applied topically daily.
Finasteride is an oral tablet which blocks the hormone that leads to hair loss.

Many people are on both (including lots of actors). It’s very commonly used.

This was my son, and like PP he used to wear a hat.

He is now late 20s and has shaved his head for the last 10 years or so. A lot of his friends have done the same. He has a lovely girlfriend as do his mates.

There isn't really anything you can do unfortunately except sympathise.

He will get over it as he gets older as long as you don't make a huge thing about it, but it is very difficult. You (and him) have my sympathy.

Same here. Eldest son was receding at17, I was gutted for him but said nothing, He got his hair cut often and styled it to hide the loss but when lockdown hit, he shaved it off and has never looked back. He is late 20's now and genuinely doesn't worry about it. Sure,he would rather have a full head of hair but he's come to terms with it (and in my opinion is very handsome with a shaved head)

My DB had a receding hairline at 20 he still has at 64 never got any worse.

Minoxidil works really well at regrowing hair but you need to use it regularly

DS is 18 and is worried his hair is receding and thinning

It is sadly

He's been growing it and will get a good cut to make it look better. So linger at the top and brushed forwards but short at the sides and back

Ijussthadanegg · 01/06/2024 23:05

I don't know if someone's already mentioned this, and it's maybe more of a last resort, but scalp tattooing is always an option (before & after images are from google)

I don't think I've ever read so much hogwash on a single thread.

Clearly any person, be it man or woman, young or old, rich or poor without a luscious head of hair is just an idiot who can't be bothered to eat cottage cheese, take a multivitamin and wash their hair in baked beans (or whatever the science is on here).

I am a mum of a 10yo DS who is very unlikely to keep his hair past early twenties, looking how the male line fares. He'll have millions of other dudes for company.

AliceMcK · 01/06/2024 23:17

Most of the men in my mother’s family were bald by early 20s. I can’t recommend anything other than see a gp and look online for private consultations. It was expected in my family so it was embraced. My DBs managed to last till mid 20s before needing to shave their heads. One wears a lot of hats the other dosnt care.

Ciderlout · 01/06/2024 23:20

Aww bless him. Let us know how he gets on

QueenCamilla · 01/06/2024 23:29

... And someone even offered tips on how to encourage testosterone. It literally is testosterone that causes male pattern baldness! Even in women!

Women can take anti-androgens to manage the situation but for men the side-effects are often much worse than channelling Mr Statham and just getting on with it.
Still millions choose the medication route (Finasteride) and millions bitterly regret it.

Oblomov24 · 01/06/2024 23:44

15 is young, get him checked out by GP first, then look at private options.

ManyATrueWord · 01/06/2024 23:52

Propecia.(Prescription) And topical minoxidil.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 02/06/2024 00:01

Minoxidil and finestride are extremely effective. My sons dad went bald on top, completely bald in a circle on his head, and a year later it's full of hair. It is still generally thinner but you can't always tell, and that's only because of his age and how long he left it before starting treatment.

I read another thread on here recommending rosemary oil if you can find it. The person who used it was a woman though and she talked about it being necessary to apply it to the roots which not everyone did. I think she said to leave it on for a long time but don't quote me.

Rosemary mint hair and scalp strengthening oil by mielle is what I used for dds hair loss. Massage into scalp , leave for a couple of hours before washing the hair.
Not only has her hair loss slowed down completely but she has alot of new growth as well as a really healthy scalp.

shams05 · 02/06/2024 00:29

We used it for around 5 weeks before seeing real results and still carry on using twice a week.

Haggisfish3 · 02/06/2024 00:33

I have read that men who bald earlier have higher levels of testosterone and are more fertile than non bald men. I mention this in my lesson on hormones. 😬

theeyeofdoe · 02/06/2024 00:44

ManyATrueWord · 01/06/2024 23:52

Propecia.(Prescription) And topical minoxidil.

This. works.

My family were all bald (and very fertile) by age 16.

You can give him the option to embrace it or try and keep it.

Louise303 · 02/06/2024 02:23

I would get his testosterone levels checked i know someone that went on the growth hormone injection saizen at 16 because of this. It may be hereditary or a deficiency if he is able to grow a beard or stubble but it would be best to get a referral to an endicrologist just to make sure. I do not know about a lot of lotions never tried the viviscal one but did see a difference with the tablets when I used them when ran down. I did not find the nioxin any good it was just an expensive waste of money. I used Jamaican black castor oil on my eyebrows and thought there was a difference I know people use it on there scalp. I use a scalp scrub but only once a month some people say it helps hopefully I experience hair loss on my temples mostly. A good diet will help also he is so young could be stress at school I hope he starts seeing an improvement bless him.

My husband started going bald at 17 unfortunately it was classic male pattern balding ,in his 20,s he shaved it all off and it looked fine but I understand 15 is very young and it must be hard at that sge.

x2boys · 08/07/2025 21:54

Phantasmagorically · 01/06/2024 22:41

of course bald men can be attractive! But that's cold comfort to a 15 year old boy who's losing their hair. And the 'wow maybe this is a good thing' approach would most likely just be irritating. It's okay to recognise that this might be devastating for them rather than taking the Pollyanna path.

Agree with this my eh is bald he was bald before I met him obviously it didn't put me off ,but 15 is very younng to be dealing with it.

girljulian · 08/07/2025 22:05

I’m really creeped out by bald men but it’s probably because nobody in my family was bald. Lots of people fancy bald men!

How is this helpful???

PiggyPigalle · 08/07/2025 22:20

You say he doesn't eat vegetables. Does he drink plenty of plain water.

Justhere65 · 08/07/2025 22:33

My grandson started losing his hair early and at 21 is now bald. I offered to take him to the GP/private hospital and he said ‘I’m fine with it, Grandma. It’s only mummy who worries about it’. He is very handsome, is doing well at work and has a lovely girlfriend. As long as he’s happy and thriving we’re happy too.
He may change his mind in the future when hair transplants are more commonplace but for now he is okay.
