Why did your diet fail?

I'm trying to lose weight.
Again.
And trying to think of all the reasons why it fails every time and how I can avoid that this time?
So fat I've got-
Boredom
Impatience - wanting results too quickly
Other people buying treat food
Special occasions
Falling off the wagon and not getting back on it
Not drinking enough water
Thinking I deserve a treat
Depriving myself too much.

The times it failed were lack of consistency due to all of the above reasons you’ve listed.

It finally succeeded when I accepted that it was just going to take a loooong time but that if I wanted to lose weight I just had to stick with it. I just kept thinking that, a year from now, I would be exactly as I am (fat, miserable, full of self loathing) if I didn’t stick with it. Just take it day by day.

An old colleague used to diet before Christmas to lose weight so that she could eat what she wanted over Christmas so she just put her weight back on, rather than adding to it. It didn’t occur to her to not eat so much over Christmas and just keep losing the weight rather than going back up to where she was in the beginning. That seems bonkers to me now.

I followed Cartergood on Instagram. He was very motivational.

Thanks I will look cartergood up. It is just the day in day out drudgery isn't it.

Because in the majority of cases, diets both work and don’t work. They work in the short term as your body loses weight due to you restricting calories or sugar but then your body will adjust back to its set base weight (which is very hard to change). Often this involves people putting the weight back on and more. The book ‘Why we eat (too much)’ or associated podcasts are very interesting.

The thing is, if you modify the way you eat, it only takes about a month for a ‘diet’ to become your normal way of eating, so the drudgery stops. After 40 years of being overweight and obese, I lost 6st over two years and have kept it off without any difficulty. It cost me a month of self-discipline avoiding high calorie foods, but after that, I found that I actually enjoyed living off salads, fresh veg, grilled meats and fish, and I didn’t enjoy sweets, stodge and snacky things any more.

I still have an occasional dessert or a meal with chips when I’m eating out, or a few rice crackers with a glass of wine, but a bar of 70% chocolate can last me a couple of weeks now. I look back on the time when a six-pack of KitKats or a whole pack of Pringles was a regular treat, and wonder how I could face it.

Less refined carbs and sugar. Eat healthy fats.

What "diet" were you following? I calorie count using MyFitnessPal. I've just had a Mr Whippy ice cream and I'm still within my calorie allowance for the day. It doesn't feel a chore, can still have treats and still lose weight!!

Try the fast 800 by Michael mosely. I don’t know how much you need to lose but in 12 weeks you can easily lose 2-3 stone.

I’ve cut out all processed food and so not fallen off the wagon at all, now I’m maintaining just by eating healthy home cooked food.

I'm a lazy, greedy cow tbh

Howcanichange · 01/06/2024 19:12

I have 2 stone to lose. I have tried Michael moseley before but it was tough!! Also hard when having to think about the rest of the family too!
