Come here to grumble about HMRC

Been doing a lovely tango with HMRC over the past few weeks and thought I'd create a chat for anyone else who fancies a grumble.

My circumstances:

  • 2023/2024 was self-employed for half the year, ended my self-employment and became full-time employed from Feb 2024
  • Filled in my self assessment in April with details of all my income, specifying that I was a Scottish tax resident, and that my self-employment had ceased
  • Got a 'correction' back from HMRC requesting 2k LESS tax from me than what I'd calculated, as they'd decided randomly that I'm on a UK tax rate
  • I called them up to correct them. 1 hour into the call HMRC just randomly cuts me off (having put me on hold for 45 mins first)
  • They've placed an 'adjustment' on my account that now states that I should pay them 3k over what they're actually due (so 5k over what their initial sum was) - based on their adjustment, I'd have had to have earned an additional 16k in income than what I actually did. No details as to how they derived this bonkers figure
  • They've also updated my tax code for my PAYE to reduce my personal allowance - again, randomly they've decided I'll be earning over 100k even though I've declared my self-employment as having ceased and my 2024/2025 income will be substantially less than that (especially since I'll be on mat leave for 6 months of it on maternity allowance as I don't qualify for mat pay)
  • I've tried to call them every day since but keep getting cut off after 5 minutes saying there's no advisers available to take my call
  • I've sent them messages since and updated my digital account so fingers crossed the amendments come through within their supposed 15 day response window
  • argh!

Just why is nothing easy?? Really regret trying to do the right thing and correcting them about my residency now!

I've found their online chat service to be far, far better than the telephone "service"...

You inspired me to give it another try and GREAT SUCCESS: MY TAX CODE HAS BEEN CORRECTED!

I'm now number 63 (previously number 81) in a queue to sort out the self assessment tax issue. Fingers crossed it gets resolved just as quickly!

Thank you, you're my HMRC talisman and I will be tagging you in all future tax grumbles for good fortune

Strangely enough , Dh paying what he owed was taken very promptly online through the Gateway account and showing up as paid quicky too. So if you're paying them , it's fairly efficient. It's getting to that point that's a pain.

I should've just paid them the incorrect lower amount when I had the chance...

They'll only come back and take more from you later. But I understand the sentiment.

I can't even access my government gateway account. Nothing works. I don't receive any reset emails. I've tried many different times over the past few weeks so I'm stuck.

I've spent 160 minutes on hold to the HMRC this morning, to finally get through to someone who was working from home with kids shouting in the background. After just repeating back everything I had told him from my gateway account and clearly not understanding my question, he has randomly adjusted my tax code and made everything even worse. I'm so upset as I need every penny at the moment and my tax code has been changed from 1275L to K15 - which basically means that I no longer have any personal allowance this tax year and will be taxed on my entire income - which surely can't be right. I have an accountant and hopefully they can help me on Monday but it shouldn't be this hard 🙁

Two years after I became self employed, I got a £1000 fine for not filing a self assessment form the year before I became self employed, whilst I was still employed and paying tax.

Fkn HMRC fkn bunch of fkn cunts.

I can't be arsed to tell the whole long tale but they tried to charge me 2k and harassed me about it when I was heavily pregnant with an unexpected 1st pregnancy in my 20s.. living in a bedsit.. on a zero hours minimum wage contract.. with no savings.. supposedly on PAYE
My work sent them some wrong info which lead them to believe I should have been on self assessment.. they sent the letter to the wrong address despite having my real address... then charged me tonnes of fines.
I had nothing and I couldn't even claim maternity pay as the info my job had sent was wrong for that too (it's more complicated than that but I can't be arsed going into it) despite working full time hours. I was working on secure wards and they didn't want me once I was visibly pregnant due to the risk so I didn't get asked for so I had no hours... so no income... no maternity pay and couldn't claim any benefits as I was technically employed.

And the HMRC started harassing me for money.. I had to steal milk and pasta from the supermarket to live and the HMRC were trying to get 2k off me.. I had debt collection agencies harassing me
I was really sick during the pregnancy too I didn't know what to do and developed depression.

It took 2 years to sort...

And guess what. It was sorted by someone I rang at the HMRC who just pressed a button and said 'oh yeah they got you mixed up with someone else' and the whole thing went away..

After 2 years of weekly ringing and writing letters etc.. and being treated like a criminal by anyone I spoke to and like I was lying...
It just took one decent member of staff to just click a button

It still makes me so angry 10 years later.

What an absolute nightmare you went through. I hope things are going well for you now x

Wow, out of all outcomes that's definitely the worst! I've finally finished my chatbot session and everything has been rectified 🙌Would definitely recommend abandoning calling them in favour of just chatting online if you can. Fingers crossed for a good outcome for you

@CurlyhairedAssassin bizarrely at one point I had 3 accounts! Have you checked if you have any dormant ones lingering about?

@daffodilandtulip this is your fault for not being a clairvoyant - clearly you need to file taxes prior to becoming self-employed 😉

Actually that's not far off what they said - "anybody can be requested to fill in a self assessment form at any time, regardless of their employment status."

CaribouCarafe · 31/05/2024 16:39

@daffodilandtulip what a beautifully rage-inducing sentence, I'm hoping you didn't need to pay the fine in the end?

@CaribouCarafe I did. I battled for months, plenty of evidence of full time work and taxes paid and when I started my business, but they were going to take further action for non payment so I had to pay up. Self assessment forms are not just for the self employed; who knew!

Thankyou for starting this thread, OP. It prompted me to attempt giving HMRC a call, so I carried on cleaning the bathroom when I was on hold (which was a bonus). Then a nice man talked me through everything, and it turns out that somehow my email account had at some point decided of its own accord that emails from government gateway were unsafe 🙄i managed to add the address to my safe sender list after some faffing around searching how to do it and now my password reset emails are coming through> So all resolved finally.

Hope everyone else gets sorted. Your heart sinks when you have to ring them but sometimes you do get someone helpful.

CaribouCarafe · 31/05/2024 17:58

Wahey! Amazing news @CurlyhairedAssassin! Loving the bonus sparkly bathroom benefit as well
