Cake intolerance?

cakewoes · 30/05/2024 20:56

The allergies topic is always quiet so posting here

TMI and don't read if you're eating (I've NC!)

For my birthday a friend got me a piece of cake from a postal bakery. Almost immediately after I had severe stomach cramps, had to run to the bathroom and had bad diarrhoea
Blamed something in the cake and carried on as normal - I had this cake before and had an upset stomach but didn't link it as we had a takeaway the same night

In the meantime I've eaten supermarket puddings, biscuits, the odd cream cake etc, all fine

Today I got a millionaire brownie from my local cake shop, I've had cake from there probably monthly and no issues
Eaten it and within 20 mins, stomach cramps started, and it's like my stomach just needs to empty Confused

WTF is doing it?! I do eat vegetables Grin but probably 1-2 times a week I'll have a biscuit or egg custard tart or something and I would like this not to happen again

Allergies can built up and get worse and worse- even something you have eaten your whole life. Start keeping a food diary and keep note of ingredients. Does eggs or dairy cause issues?

What do you mean you have vegetables 1-2 times a week! What are you eating the rest of the time?

cherryassam · 30/05/2024 21:04

Lactose intolerance but only to a high amount? Some baked goods have pure lactose added as an ingredient.

No sorry I worded that wrong!

It was meant to say
I do eat vegetables Grin (as it sounds like I just eat shit from what I listed!), but 1-2 times a week I will have a biscuit/cake/something

I'm fine with eggs, dairy, sugar, cream cakes, supermarket cake/biscuits etc etc which is why I'm so confused
Previously allergic to egg and milk as a child

Most likely culprits are the wheat or the egg.

I became gluten intolerant in my 50s after no previous dietary issues.

Probably best to keep a food diary for a bit.

Would that happen with only one thing?
So scrambled eggs on toast I eat a lot no issues, cheese toasties for work lunches etc
Milk I drink regularly and cups of tea all day

Have you got the ingredients list for both products? Are there any shared ingredients outside of the standard wheat / dairy / egg?

Phineyj · 30/05/2024 21:12

It takes a bit of patience to figure out this stuff. Start by keeping a food diary and check the mail order cake for ingredients. Artificial sweeteners is another thing that seems to set a lot of people off.

cakewoes · 30/05/2024 21:13

I have the ingredient list for one so far...
I use sweeteners in my tea but always sweetex

Try and get the ingredients for the other item too, and see what is a common factor in both.

cakewoes · 30/05/2024 21:21

Gutted, the bakery I had from today is lovely
I've taken some Buscopan for the pain so hoping it eases soon

As CJ0374, allergies and intolerance can suddenly occur. You can be happily eating something all your life, and then all of a sudden become allergic/intolerant.
I know this because it happened to me.

I used to make big vats of Chilli con Carne every winter, freeze it and have it each week.
All of a sudden one week, I went into anaphylactic shock and ended up in A&E.

At the time I didn't know what it was so I had to write a food list of everything I ate that day, and then one by one go through every ingredient and test it on myself.
Fir me it was chillies. I am noe allergic to chillies - and its a pisser because I love chillies.

So unfortunately, you may have to go through the ingredient list and test them one by one.

What jumped out at me was the Strawberries and strawberry jam. My sister is allergic and gets a horrible rash

My point is: don't rule out any of the ingredients just because you have always eaten them and always been fine - it may not be fine anymore.

soupfiend · 30/05/2024 21:28

Love egg custard

I wish I could be allergic to cake. Eating some now

Actually I will quickly take that back in case I do develop an allergy to cake!

cakewoes · 30/05/2024 21:33

@minou123 it's more the fact I eat everything else separately and ok that's confusing me

Strawberries I adore and eat daily in summer, I basically eat everything Grin not picky at all

I'm under dermatology for a heat/exercise allergy but on injectable medication to stop that reaction as well as 4 antihistamines daily
Can't see a skin reaction but it's like my body wants to get rid of it out my system as quick as possible

Me and my kids react like that to rapeseed oil. Took ages to figure out as it's not a normal intolerance. You have to keep a food diary with every single ingredient to spot the culprit- then if you are like me test the theory 😂

cherryassam · 30/05/2024 21:36

Yes the rapeseed oil jumped out to me too, is this something you use regularly?

They might also just be too rich?

PurpleBugz · 30/05/2024 21:39

If it is rapeseed oil be aware due to the war in Ukraine products with sunflower oil on the ingredients may actually be using rapeseed. There is a grace period for updating the packaging currently

Oh bless you.

I completely understand you have ate everything separately and it's been OK, but keep trying.
I literally became allergic to chillies in one week.

I didn't believe it at first, because I had been eating chillies the week before, but nope, my body decided no more chillies for me.

On your ingredient list, there are things like vanilla extract, sunflower oil, radish, which may not be something you eat all the time, have ate in the past and been fine, but now your body is saying nope and getting rid of it as soon as possible.

All you can do is keep a food diary, list all the ingredients and everytime you get stomach cramps/diarrhoea,make a note of it.
You'll soon see a pattern and you'll start to identify which one of the buggers you are now allergic to.

Oooh... that's one thing I don't tend to eat unless it's in the UPF stuff I do eat like crisps etc
I cook with butter or olive oil

When you say stomach cramps I assume you mean bowel pain? That cake wouldn't be in your bowel in 20 mins. However, eating does fire up your digestive system, so anything already in your bowel will start to cause problems if they are going to. So it's likely something you've eaten 12-24 hours before (or however long food takes to get down to your personal bowel). I have IBS and I know it takes food about 24 hours to get to my bowel so if I react it's likely something I've eaten the day before at about the same time.

Cramps like norovirus type ones, really severe doubled over and instant diarrhoea
When the diarrhoea stops, the pain goes too

I get symptoms like the OP describes within an hour of drinking red wine. Needless to say, I avoid it like the plague. I've also had the same thing happen after eating mango. The effects arrive pretty quickly, I can tell you.

cakewoes · 30/05/2024 23:15

I haven't timed it but that was a rough estimate (I was busy running to the bathroom!)
It was very much "eat cake, body says absolutely not"
Also feel sick with it, like my body just wants it out asap

Yet I know I could go to Morrisons tomorrow and get a muffin with jam and cream and won't have any issues

Wine may be different as liquid passes through the stomach more quickly. But you can’t react to a food in your bowel into that food has actually reached your bowel and that takes a number of hours. People often think a food they’ve just eaten causes bowel symptoms but it’s usually because eating starts everything moving through your digestive system and it’s something they’ve eaten earlier or the day before they are reacting to.

Digestion: How long does it take?

Digestion takes about two to five days, depending on your system.

MollyButton · 30/05/2024 23:23

I get a tingling mouth from Morrisons premium scones - so I don't eat them. Couldn't work out the ingredient.
And apricots especially dried cause pretty quick bowel emptying for me - but it is hours rather than minutes.
