Help! PNC and bailiffs

Today I got a debt enforcement notice saying I had to pay by the end of the day - letter was dated 10 days ago. Apparently a warrant has been awarded.

Trouble is it’s the first I’ve heard of it! Using the details on the letter I logged into the council website and can see I briefly entered a bus lane back in December.

so ok, happy to pay the original £35 but not additional late and fees etc. typically the numbers to call the debt agency don’t work - on hold for hours and get cut off.

called the council & told them I never received the original PNC. They will ring in a few days but not before the deadline in the letter.

What happens next? Worried that this will effect my future mortgage application through no fault of my own!

Update is I spoke with council, apparently the original notice(s) went to my old address. I had updated my driving license with DVLA but not logbook. Have been advised to contact traffic enforcement centre but this takes 10 days to process and in the mean time bailiffs could visit. I’m supposed to be going into labour soon!

I’m not sure there’s much you can do part from pay, it’s on you to update your details and you didn't, it’s the logbook that shows ownership and address of the car. I’d just pay to avoid the stress.

Appeal. Infom bailiffs you are appealing. But do deal with it or they will be on your doorstep and after your car. Don't let them in if they do call.

Do you mean PCN - penalty charge notice, rather than something from the Police National Computer? (Not being snarky just want to check it's a normal PCN)

Common oversight for many and I always remind people, "did you update you v5/logbook??? This is what happens when you forget - good luck OP

I don't think you've got grounds to appeal as you failed to update your vehicle log book.
You are going to be better off paying up before it escalates to bailiffs as that will significantly increase the debt. A CCJ against you will impact a whole load of things.

Yes sorry I meant PCN - penalty charge notice.

unfortunately it has all ready gone to bailiffs, hence the additional charges. I feel so silly for not updating my log book! I am not from the UK and it is my first car here, I assumed once I told the DVLA that was enough.

Does anyone know if I pay the bailiffs now, will it leave a mark on my credit rating?

The charges will go up again if the bailiffs turn up to seize assets so you are better off paying up asap.
It will affect credit rating but the sooner you sort it out the better.
You say you are happy to pay the original £35 but not the rest but unfortunately that isn't an option.
The best thing is to try to find the money asap, see if any friends or family can lend it to you? then call them first thing Monday & pay in full.

Get on the beat the bailiffs page on Facebook. Lots of knowledgeable advice on there

Babbahabba · 01/06/2024 21:40

It's unfortunate but your own fault OP- it's common sense to check online what you need to do when buying a car in a new country- it's all online.

Pay what is owed as soon as possible is the best advice.

It’s not a parking ticket, it’s a fine for driving in a bus lane. Did you get it sorted @BluLagoon Have you had your baby? Flowers
