If you don’t live in the U.K., what’s in the English section in your supermarket?

Marmite, Branston Beans (specifically) and Barry’s tea are the 3 staples here.
If you’re REALLY lucky there’s a bottle of Heinz Salad cream occasionally.

In Switzerland - baked beans (at £3 a tin), shortbread biscuits, branston pickle, heinz ketchup, golden syrup, worcestershire sauce, malt vinegar and nice crisps. The Swiss only seem to eat paprika flavour crisps which is the worst flavour ever

I feel your pain! What is it with the bloody paprika? I was very happy when Zweifel started doing Salt & Vinegar and (whisper it 🙊) I now prefer them to Walkers.....

Nope! Not in Denmark anyway, Coke Zero is the big drink. At best you can sometimes find Coke lite which doesn’t taste the same, you can kind of hide the taste difference if you add a ton of ice but it’s pretty hard to find anyway 💔

Ah of course, I’d forgotten it’s predominantly Coke Zero on the continent. It’s not the same!

The thing I was most surprised (and happy) to find was Longley Farm cottage cheese in Lulu, Riyadh. I used to live in Muscat and we could get a very good selection of the 'Waitrose Essentials' range in Spinneys.

Also Italy.

No British section. My supermarket sells McVities digestives (complete with a sign saying "these are not for digestive health")

Weetabix

I'll appropriate Lurpak as well as it's the only non horrible fatty bland tasting Italian butter I can find.

After 8s.

The usual Mars/Twix stuff

I did find a tube of condensed milk which I bought just because it was there.

Thank fuck for Amazon. I buy in bulk.

There was something called Cheddar once in the fridges. Had the colour and substance of Kraft slices.

Loads of stuff but we're in a BOT in Caribbean and lots of Brit's here to cater for:

Marmite
Yorkshire tea
Barry's tea
Pg tips
Tesco goods
Iceland goods (was a day of celebration when Iceland/Greggs steak bakes made an arrival to the frozen section)
Waitrose foods (but essentials bacon which is circa $14.99 for 6 rashers)
Shortbread

When I first moved 16+ years ago, I had to bring my own marmite and teabags as the only stuff here was Lipton 🤮

Someone once posted a copy of their overseas Lidl's 'British week' promotions on here, which was enlightening - place marking for similar. I remember they called Worcestershire sauce 'English sauce'.

wordler · 30/05/2024 20:13

We usually see Heinz tomato soup, Hobnobs, shortbread, Branston Pickle, Aero chocolate bars, Jacob's Crackers, Batchelors Baked Beans .

Caspianberg · 30/05/2024 20:35

Oh I forgot about weetabix. It’s sold in the pharmacy like boots equivalent. In the health food section!

We have a British section in the Spar, but not really the normal supermarkets. There are things like Shreddies and some cereals, and a bunch of chocolates and sweets mainly.

But we so have a British shop where we can get most things. Except beef oxo cubes and suet! Apparently beef products are not allowed to be imported. So I have chicken and veg ones for very type of gravy 😃 it's crazy pricing so I only go on occasion.

I do love the Astonish cleaning product range, and somehow they are cheaper than the normal local products we get.

And all the orange flavoured chocolates and biscuits. That hasn't really taken off here for some reason.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 30/05/2024 21:28

Cadburys chocolate, mustard, mint sauce, lyles syrup, pickle, jams, biscuits.

We have a really good British store that has loads of stuff that the kids love but the cost is brutal. I spent 6 dollars on some Coleman's mustard the other day. Some things it's not worth compromising on.

In Canada.

Only shelf-stable items last I saw. Ambrosia Devon Custard. I think I may have seen Spotted Dick because apparently that's hilarious. Definitely marmalade and branston pickle and some cadbury and tim tams. Heinz beans are in the mainstream area. Tons of FeverTree in the mainstream mixers area. No crisps, surprisingly. Maybe they don't go over well there.

JellyTipisthebest · 30/05/2024 21:56

A picture of British section at a local supermarket. We don't often buy stuff as it more expensive than local food.
I am in New Zealand
