Tips for making dog pee smell tolerable during a visit

Family member has a male puppy and wood (not laminate) floor throughout downstairs.
Puppy pees on the floor a lot, has stained the floor in the room they shut it in. Family member has a bucket of water (no cleaning products in it) with a mop. Mop comes out to 'clean up' the pee, goes back in the bucket of pee water. Not sure how often the water is changed.
The smell is overpowering, hits you as you enter the house.
I don't want to stop visiting, family member is not approachable to help combat the problem.. is there something that I can wear to mask the smell? Essential oils, vicks etc?

I don't know why these filthy people get to dictate the terms of visiting. It's disgusting.

Because it's their house I suppose.

Vick up the nose is used by people who have to work with decomposing bodies so it should work on dog pee. Otherwise don't go and tell them why.

Poor puppy. As long as the pee smell remains he's going to think it's an acceptable place to pee - and they'll never break the cycle, and will probably end up punishing him for something he doesn't know is wrong. The bacteria in the urine need to be broken down with either a proper pet urine remover or biological washing powder.

Absolutely this post. You can get a product called simple solution from pets at home. It's available for a range of different areas; hard floors, carpet, decking etc. If MIL doesn't get rid of the pee properly, the puppy will simply keep peeing there and 10 / 15 years from now it will be the same situation..... Poor puppy 😔

This all sounds a bit fucked up. Dh can’t speak to his own mother?

Assuming there are mobility issues preventing her walking the dog, then I’d guess she’s not capable of cleaning properly either?

If you want to offer “help” then broach it kindly, or perhaps suggest hiring a cleaner to stay on top of it.
Putting some dog friendly cleaning product in the “wee bucket” might be a start. And replacing the mop. That’s probably just smearing bacteria, faeces and whatever else around the room at this point. 🤮

I’m rolling my eyes at a person taking on a puppy when they cannot (or will not) train or even walk it.
It’s bloody irresponsible to say the least.

Yeah, this is the conversation DH and I had when she announced out of the blue she was getting the puppy. She had a dog that she didn't train and didn't walk (outsourced) or clean up after which died.
My opinions on responsible dog owning and breeding have not gone down well in the past.

I don't know if it makes a difference, I'm calling it a puppy but she has had it a year already. So this isn't a 'wait a few weeks' issue.

I would just point blank refuse to visit.

Favouritefruits · 30/05/2024 13:45

We looked after my SILs dog, it pissed at crapped everywhere, it only stayed 5 days but we needed to get a new carpet as it seeps into the underlay! 🤢 they won’t be able to get rid of the smell, my best advice is to visit them in a pub or nearby restaurant nothing will save your nose from puppy pee!

Given the context I apologise for calling you “passive”.

Clearly there’s only so much you can do or say as DIL when you have a fragile relationship with a very difficult MIL.

As others have said- keep the visits infrequent and brief. I’d certainly be worried about other behavioural issues with the dog. I don’t trust untrained dogs around children- they can be unpredictable and reactive- and out of control as they mature.

Sorry I'd be reporting her. We had a Labrador puppy who could pee for England. The mop bucket was on duty 24/7. By three months she was dry. But we never locked her away just scooped her upper every time she woke. We're pensioners, but our mop bucket was changed regularly, Zoflora sloshed in as well as floor cleaner.

Your MIL is a lazy, dirty slob who doesn't deserve a dog.

Batshittery of this situation aside, I used to put Vicks on the inside of my nostrils when I did home visits to hoarder houses.

Was going to say this, police do it when they go to a house where there's a potential of a dead body.

longdistanceclaraclara · 30/05/2024 20:08

It will be very very difficult to get rid of the smell of it had penetrated through the floor boards which has most likely done after a year of it.

Reporting her to whom? The RSPCA? 😂

Why not, can't see how abusing a dog is funny.

Im with you op (and @justasking111
Its very frustrating to feel powerless when dog owners are irresponsible, ignorant and lazy. And then usually want sympathy when their house becomes infested with silverfish and the dog they’ve neglected to train becomes unmanageable or aggressive or attacks a child.

Reporting her to whom and for what? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well that’s the frustrating thing isn’t it?

Serious neglect can be reported to the RSPCA but low level neglect and buying from questionable breeders, not putting any effort in to training a dog is only flagged up when the dog becomes seriously Iill, the owner can’t cope with its behaviour or it mauls some poor child.

RampantIvy · 30/05/2024 22:53

MIL is the type of person that nobody can approach,

What's the worst that can happen if you suggest helping her clean up (with the appropriate cleaning stuff)?

If she is as horrible as she sounds why do you bother visiting her. Your DH can go on his own.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 30/05/2024 22:58

The dog will keep peeing on the floor as it now smells like his toilet.
Your friend needs a proper urine removing cleaner or at the very least white vinegar ( fresh every time) but I think her floor is probably trashed.
Some people just shouldn’t have dogs when they know so little of the basics. ☹️

Bourneo · 02/06/2024 09:32

If it's been a few months things may have changed. 3 months ago I thought I'd never crack the toilet training, but now he's almost perfect. Rarely has an accident. Are they crate training? You could suggest that? That minimises the chance of an accident.

Oh I missed this, I assumed it was 3/4 months. Yeah that's going to take a lot of hard work to change and sounds like they're not willing to put in the work. Meet at the pub.

Bordesleyhills · 03/06/2024 12:47

the Urine might have have soaked into the floor, the issue is the pup will be dawn back. Urine remover and taking it out to pee
