Canines not growing down

DS is 13 and has all of his adult teeth fully grown in apart from canines which have erupted a year ago but since then haven’t moved. It does look to my highly untrained eye that there would be space for them. Dentist says he has really good teeth as straight with no crowding. Anyway she has taken x-rays and will refer on to orthodontist. Anyone experienced similar and did they grow in. Dentist said orthodontist May recommend a special brace to get them out.

I'm 63 and I still have my baby canines! Not quite the same thing I know if your D'S has already lost his. My adult canines are lying horizontally in the bone above, which means that they will never come down and which is why I still have my baby teeth as they haven't been pushed out. It also means that I can't have implants as there isn't room for the screws. Luckily they're still hanging in there.

@DilemmaDelilah Ooh, you are exactly the same as me (but 10 years older!). That's amazing yours are still hanging on. One of mine has got VERY loose over the last few months. I'll accidentally bite on something, it loosens ridiculously and then firms up a bit, but remains very wobbly. I know it's going to fall out out soon - I can't see it still being there in 10 years time. My dentist's plan for when it does is a Maryland bridge.

Sorry for interjecting OP, but it's rare to 'meet' someone still with their baby teeth! I hope someone comes along to answer your big teeth question!

I still have several baby teeth too! I gather it's usually genetic

@midlifepisces yes I think it is genetic. One of my daughters still has 2 baby teeth and the other has 1. It will be interesting to see how the next generation turn out!

I met someone who told me she still had two baby teeth recently. The dentist put a coating on them to help them last longer. I bc wonder if they were the canines as well.

DS lost last of baby teeth last year though and both teeth are 2-3 mm out the gum line. I think it’s starting to effect his confidence which is a shame because he has fab teeth apart from this

Hopeful bump x

My 12 y/o daughter has this (but baby teeth still in situ and adult canines lying horizontally in gum - not erupted). NHS dentist has referred her to orthodontist but said it will be a few years wait.

My lying horizontal canines were not discovered until I was an adult and I was told there was nothing that could be done about them. I suppose it would have been useful (and maybe more attractive?) to have had fangs like everyone else, but it hasnt really made any difference to me and they are still there nearly 63 years later, so don't worry about it too much.

My teeth are pretty well covered by my lips anyway - maybe if I was gummy (as in my gums showed when I smiled) it might have made a difference.

One of my canines was horizontal, but the other came through normally. The baby tooth wasn’t in good shape so I had surgery to take out the baby tooth, and they cut the canine out as it was moving horizontally into my face. the concern was that it would push all my other teeth out of alignment. I then had braces to pull my teeth into line and close the gap.

This was years ago, long before implants were any good so probably wouldn’t be the treatment of choice now! I have to say though, once the braces were off nobody has ever commented to me about my mono fang, in fact people are surprised if I mention it and I have to show them!
