What age child wrote this ?

I recognise it is a wide spectrum but just wondering what the average thoughts are, am wondering if my sons age is consistent with his writing ability.

I don't help him with the spellings, as the school wish for him to use the Phonics sound to spell.

What age child wrote this ?

I agree, I'd say Year 1, age 6

Perhaps around 5? Some of the letters are well formed and confident, but the spelling is weak and the spacing all over the page suggests a younger child. There is also no punctuation although the capital I is good.

mynameiscalypso · 29/05/2024 18:07

Reception too. I have an August baby so not quite 5. His handwriting isn't as good as that but his spelling is better.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/05/2024 18:07

It really depends on the school and education they've followed. I've seen 10 yo with worse, but they went to a Steiner school. It could be anything really from 5 to 8?

Having worked as a reception TA for many years, I’d say it was consistent with a average 4/5 year old.

LongLostSock · 29/05/2024 18:08

If not SEN I'd say Reception due to the mention of using phonics to spell. In year 1 they start teaching more on spelling and true phonic make up.

But my dc is year 2, SEN and its miles above them. Its subjective to the child.

End of reception or Yr 1.

My 5 year old in reception would be able to write that easily but my 7 year old wouldn't have managed as well as his handwriting is all over the place letter size wise unless he is really concentrating on it.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 29/05/2024 18:11

4-6 depending on ability.

SpringKitten · 29/05/2024 18:11

i Would say end-of- Reception based on my 5 yo, he is in the second lowest phonics group in his school and they have done oo and ee last half term. His handwriting is probably a bit better than this when he’s concentrating, I think you often find if they are concentrating on spelling they don’t always do so brilliantly with spacing and consistency of letter shapes.

Ciderlout · 29/05/2024 18:12

5 ish

Thistooshallpass. · 29/05/2024 18:12

Age 6 .
Only on Mumsnet would the average 4 year old be writing like this !
BTW I am a teacher .

Janedoe82 · 29/05/2024 18:12

5/6

Ireolu · 29/05/2024 18:14

Yr 1 6 Yr old

ShinyWorthKeeping · 29/05/2024 18:16

4-5

Star1223 · 29/05/2024 18:17

Thanks all, he is year 1, already 6.

Is not keen on reading or writing at home (finds it boring!) And his school have let me know that he is very behind his class mates and he is starting SEN after half term, which I am pleased about that he is getting the extra support but not so keen that they don't celebrate the positives too (some of you have mentioned the good letter formation which I am pleased about :) )

Hmm
CammoMammo · 29/05/2024 18:22

My son is year one. Your son’s writing is a hundred times better than my son’s.

mynameiscalypso · 29/05/2024 18:22

I'm surprised that the school say he's very behind. Maybe at the lower end of average but I wouldn't have thought he was exceptionally behind.
