Help us plan our holiday in Weardale please. Staying near Frosterley. Looking for gnomes!

Mumsnet has never let me down when it comes to local knowledge, so here's my annual holiday request. We're staying in Frosterley, near Stanhope, for a week at the end of July with 17-year-old DS and our young dog. We've been before, about 12 years ago, and DS has asked to go back to the same cottage. He's a motorsport and aviation fanatic, and DH and I both like nice walks, gardens and photography. DS and DH are going to Croft on the Sunday for the touring cars event and DS will inevitably want to go karting. We'll probably go to Beamish again, but other than that we have the whole week to fill. We're vegetarian and will have our cocker spaniel with us all week because she can't be left at the cottage, so hit me with lovely places to go and good dog-friendly places to eat.

Also - this a very random question, but it can't hurt to ask! We were last in Frosterley when DS was four and mad keen on trains, and he has a core memory of us taking the train from the village, probably towards Bishop Auckland, and passing a house with loads and loads of gnomes in the garden. He's spent hours over the years looking for it on Google Earth with no joy and he desperately wants to find it again. I'd rather not waste half a day on a boring train if we can just go straight to the gnomes and get a photo to shut him up! 😂

The bay horse in wolsingham allows dogs and there are lots of walks around wolsingham. You can do a circular walk around tunstall reservoir. Blanchland is lovely and both lord crew arms and the monks tea rooms allow dogs. Cross keys in hamsterley village has great food and allows dogs

I live just outside wolsingham ☺️ and have a 9 month old Labrador so we know all the spots to go to!!

If your son likes planes there is a lovely bistro place called the aviator cafe beside a small airfield ( it’s near sedgefield / fish burn )

If you don’t mind going a bit further Alnwick Castle and gardens are fabulous .

Blanchard is amazing, it was voted the best village in England. You could have a nice hike round Derwent Reservoir first, then go for dinner in the pub in Blanchland.

There is a great walk circular walk around blanchland up to the moors.

Is it wrong of me that I'm watching this thread, with no knowledge of this area of the country, simply because I want to know if OP finds the gnomes!

I will report back! 😄We're not going until the end of July though.

So many great ideas already - thank you all so much!

Ooh, a Sunday sinner sounds fun!! 😉

Thanks again, everyone! Nothing back from the railway trust about the gnomes, sadly.

Just bumping this for any more ideas, expecially dog-friendly things our 17-year-old will enjoy.

How did it go? Weather had been glorious here this week.

spiderlight · 04/08/2024 10:38

We got back last night. We were really lucky with the weather - only one very brief spell of light rain all week. The first thing to report is that we did not find the gnomes 😥DS and I did the whole train journey and spoke to the volunteer conductor, who looked at me as if I was mad, but there was no sign of them. Other than that, we had some really lovely days. DS had a fab day at Croft Circuit. Beamish was heaving but still well worth a second visit. High Force was as stunning as ever. We had a lovely couple of hours in Eggleton Hall gardens and the old churchyard, followed by a slightly frustrating visit to Barnard Castle, as most of the shops in the town were shut even though it was only about 4 when we got there. We went to Vindolanda, Housesteads and Hadrian's Wall, which DH really enjoyed, and had some lovely walks in the area around the cottage. Struggled a bit food-wise - we had an amazing meal at a Turkish restaurant in Durham and another at Buon Appetito in Wolsingham, and nice lunches in Middleton, Bisho Auckland and Hexham, but a few of the pubs we tried for the evening had very limited veggie options and one that advertised itself as 'dog-friendly' wasn't. Overall, though, it was a really good week and the cottage itself was amazing - we saw barn owls, a merlin, oystercatchers, and all sorts of other birds that we never see at home.

Wow! I'm glad that you really enjoyed yourselves and that it was worthwhile. You certainly packed a lot into a week.

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/08/2024 15:41

So glad you had a lovely time, I'm thinking of moving to this area so it's a great thread for me.

One little gem that DH and DS enjoyed, although it didn't take them long to go round, was the museum of classic sci-fi in Allendale. We found it completely by accident and DH in particular absolutely loved it, as he's a massive sci-fi nerd.

SinnerBoy · 05/08/2024 21:32

Oh, I didn't know about that. I used to work in Allenheads and passed through Allendale daily.

We had a mooch around the gallery in Allendale as well and bought a couple of lovely hares (and made friends with a puppy in the cafe).

The village pub in Hamsterley does amazing food. Always some veg options. God their chips are to die for 😋🤤

They have a beer garden so can take the dog.
