If getting landscaping done, would you expect to be consulted about the paving?

We're having some long awaited work done to our front garden, to remove some ancient ugly paving and replace with stabilised gravel and a path. The design was done a couple of months ago, but then the start was delayed and communication hasn't been great. We haven't had any conversations about choice of paving, but I've been told it has been ordered and will arrive tomorrow. Is it usual to not be asked for an opinion? I'm rather indecisive, and very busy, so part of me was dreading the decision, but surely I should have been consulted?

Seeing as there is a gazillion choices, yes the choice would be mine

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 28/05/2024 21:59

Of course I would. Colour, size, finish, type, layout.
All of the above will impact on the quote though. Did they quote based on a particular tile and that is what they are now providing?

Of course you should , if you don’t like it tomorrow just say no .

Did you discuss the plan with the teadesperson, you should have chosen the paving stones and the gravel, have you had any communication with them. How can you pay for something if you don't know what it is or the cost.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/05/2024 22:06

Err, yes, I'd expect to be given a catalogue or 2, and then to see samples wither at the builders merchants or for the landscaper to bring to me. Only time I'd not expect them at this stage is if the quote specified exactly what they'd use because I'd already decided before finding a contractor. I'd also have expected to see samples / options on the gravel too - did you?

Utterly bizarre that the landscaper thinks they can choose any old thing and you'll be happy. Have they chosen the same as what you already have and assumed you just want it replacing like for like?

Did you point out that you've not chosen what you want yet, so how have they ordered it?!

QueenCamilla · 28/05/2024 22:11

Yeah, the builder has gone rouge - surprise, surprise!
But equally learn to be specific about what you need, be interested enough in the project (if you're not, why would they be) and always be on guard regarding the time lines and how your money is getting spent. Turn your back and you could be in for problems much greater than crazy paving across every avaliable surface. Unfortunately.

Saying you are very busy and indecisive, you didn't give them the impression that you are leaving the finish to them did you?

In the same situation here, whole rear garden being landscaped soon with new patio, paths, lawn & borders but we are firmly in control of what is being installed.

No, not at all.
When I mentioned that we hadn't talked about it she apologised and said she thought we had. Clearly she's a bit scatty.

My landscaper and me agreed every detail before the work was started so I know the exact spec of everything because it all affects the cost of the job and finished project. His job was to discuss my ideas, offer suggestions and then make the design happen.
