Do you or would you live backing on to a public playing field?

Considering a house that does.

Large commuter type village, working class/ MC.

Detached Houses either side and small strip of playing field at the end.

Do you or would you live there?

24 hour access to the playing field. Few public event per year (fireworks and summer show) weekly football. Nowhere near the main gates and car park but near an access footpath (200m so the path itself is no issue.

Yes I would still be interested

Scousefab · 28/05/2024 18:07

i hate the sound of footballs so unless you like the constant banging give it a miss! If noise doesn’t bother you proceed.

LaPalmaLlama · 28/05/2024 18:10

Is it floodlit? Key question as if it is then it basically doubles how much it will be used in the evenings when you’re likely to be around. I’d also come down in the evening and see if it’s used as a general hang out spot. Also how long is your garden?

WePanickedAtTheDisco · 28/05/2024 18:10

No

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/05/2024 18:12

We live opposite a playing field. It's fine. The only real issue is some of the parking when the Saturday morning football is on - there are two pitches, so about 26 kids per pitch, and the car park only takes about 16 cars.

I quite like the noise of children playing. The matches always finish by 12.30. Other events like the fete only happen once a year.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/05/2024 18:13

I should add, our field isn't floodlit so the lighting isn't an issue.

CrotchetyQuaver · 28/05/2024 18:16

Check whether it's got a bit of a reputation for kids hanging out there and trouble happening. In our town the local yobbos go to the town recreation ground in the evenings, generally get up to no good and frequently vandalise the football stand and start fires. This is a small market town that regularly features in the best places to live in the uk type articles. Low crime, higher than average retired population, it is a nice place to live, but not without some social problems.

Mil’s garden gate goes straight onto a playing field, no bother.

ODFOx · 28/05/2024 18:18

Check which way the cricket square points in case you are likely to get the 6s on your patio, otherwise if there's a footpath at the bottom of the garden make sure that you have a prickly hedge and crack on.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/05/2024 18:21

I do, and I love it. I also grew up over the wall from a rugby club, so I barely notice the bellowing and cheering.

I wouldn't love floodlights on late, but our end of the pitches is not lit anyway.

Reallybadidea · 28/05/2024 18:24

We do, it's fine. There's no floodlighting near our bit but we are at the end where the fair/village fete/cricket/football takes place. There is some noise with these events and very occasionally kids will play music late at night but it's never been any significant nuisance. We moved from a rural village which was actually far worse in terms of noise because of loads of tractors, sometimes in the middle of the night, lots of noisy dogs around and inconsiderate neighbours whose kids had frequent late-night parties.

The trade off from our pov is that it's a lovely, well-maintained green space and because of it being a playing field the chance of it ever being built on is basically zero.

thedendrochronologist · 28/05/2024 18:33

Thanks so much these are all great considerations

It's at the opposite end to the main gate and play park but concerned of youths and ASB

I've looked again at the plot. It's actually a really weird triangular plot and the pointed end of the triangle that attaches to the field and in front of that is a summerhouse. So there is either a tiny border or no border at all to the field.

The cricket strip is worryingly near looking google earth but not heard of it being used ever

As far as I know there are not flood lights but these are all great things to think.

We live opposite a playing field. We have no issues with it, but the house that is adjacent has the occasional issue with kids climbing their garden fence and messing about in their (massive) garden. Parking can sometimes be an issue as it’s more of a park that’s used for sports than a playing field with a carpark.

autumn1610 · 28/05/2024 18:47

My garden backs on to a football pitch/playing field there is a wide path and then set slightly above. Loads of trees between us and the field. It’s bloody lovely no one overlooking and loads of birds. Football is sometimes annoying at weekends (just kids football) apart from that and the occasion knobhead on a motorcross bike it’s so quiet

CormorantStrikesBack · 28/05/2024 18:52

There’s a playing field near me which last year had a massive skate ramp put on it, maybe 50ft from some houses. The noise is non stop. Thankfully I don’t live near enough to hear it but every time I walk past I thank God I didn’t buy a house on x road.

so do think about how use might change

thedendrochronologist · 28/05/2024 19:00

There is a skate park at the main gates need to work out how far it is.

Currently live at the end of a quiet cul de sac with a beautiful woodland behind but have a tiny garden and no space to grow.

The trees are beautiful here and the deer and birds but the trees are growing and really big. Stealing light and a hazard. It would be so weird without the beautiful trees we have here. Also on a main road (well road- main ish)

I'd also work on the assumption that just because it's a playing field doesn't mean it won't be built on. We bought a house that backed on to a sports field. We had 2 bowling greens over our back fence. Fast forward 10 years and they relocated the bowling greens to another part of the field, sold off some land to a developer who built houses on it. I'd rather have had the bowling greens!

Eeeden · 28/05/2024 19:26

Yes, we would use it all the time for football, rugby, running, throwing the ball for the dog.

MrsCarson · 28/05/2024 20:42

We lived in a village and our house backed onto the football fields, no lights and it was used by everyone for football games and cricket. All the kids in our street met up for games of rounders and the village fair was held on it each year. It was brilliant. Never any trouble from people on the field. Cars parked on the other side away from the houses and only the residents had gates onto the field.
I'd love it
