Had a few comments about how I eat..

Which include "are u a gerbil?' 'Are you autistic? (er, yes), 'How do you cope in restaurants?'
Never questioned it before but it's got into my head a bit now.
Usually by people I don't know too well, such as a neighbour popping in, visiting cousin, DP's sister..

My daily eating will go something like this:
Breakfast - 1 wholemeal seeded toast with peanut butter or marmalade. A couple of days per week I will have 2 scrambled eggs instead.

Lunch - working from home I wake late-ish so tend not to want any. Will sometimes eat a banana or pear.

Dinner (I have about 3 variations on rotation) ....
Small grilled flatbread (around 40g) topped with peppers, pesto, herbs, olives, tomatoes, onion, spinach, mozzarella and either chicken or fish.
A few nights per week it might be less complex rice, green veggies and mackerel.
Sometimes I will toss some mediterranean veggies in oil and eat with seasoned & baked white fish portion.
Now and again I will make my own coleslaw (cabbage, cress, radish, carrot, mayo) and have with chicken or cheese.

Supper - handful of berries and a bit of greek yoghurt with seeds, or a handful of nuts with figs, avo slices or slice of cheese.

If there's something 'off' about this, could you suggest some tips? I am always satiated and enjoy yoga and lots of walking, but don't have a demanding physical schedule. I prefer nibbly things with flavour so anything like Tapas or Sushi suits me, as opposed to large hot meals. I have never got along with larger cooked meals. I love taste so stuff like garlic, herbs and lemon, lime etc are my favourites.
Due to some of the comments I have started to worry a bit if I am missing something, or some essential nutrient? I really don't like porridge, red meat or pasta. I can't see how I could bulk up more, but do like fresh bread!

It’s fine but your very specific descriptions along with a pretty limited variety (sets of ‘safe’ foods) does make it sound like you probably have some issues with food. You are controlling your intake to a high extent. If you’re a healthy weight etc then I’m sure you’re fine but this level of control does indicate some food based issues. Which I suspect you know really, just hide with the ‘oh I just don’t get very hungry’, ‘I love taste’, ‘I just prefer nibbly bits’.

Or the OP is autistic and like a lot of autistic people has clear preferences re food.
It’s not about control. It’s about textures, tastes etc….

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 28/05/2024 17:35

Because to some people if there’s no meat, they can’t cope and it really bothers them.

It’s very healthy food and sounds bloody delicious.

DullFanFiction · 28/05/2024 17:38

@Laiku your diet is fine.
The fact you’re eating similar things everyday is fine. Most people do (I think people have in average 3~5 meals they do in rotation)

People around you are quite simply rude.
Your cousin probably has issues with the fact there is little meat in your diet.
Your DP’s sister is just rude and prone to interpret things in a weird way - probably because you simply don’t eat the same way than her. And hers is obviously the ‘normal’ way.

Just ignore.

Tbh, there are a few people on the spectrum in my family. I’d be delighted if their diet was as varied and balanced as yours.

Some bloody odd posts about my mental health here!

Back to the food though - I wish I had access to some decent fresh fish, I don't have a great local supply really.

As for the comments, they've occurred in a cluster, recently. I can't imagine voicing an opinion about someone's food choices so it stood out. DP's sister is a bit weird about my shopping habits but there's likely a more complex issue driving that, which is another thread entirely.

No none of these people are into junk food, just different tastes. I have definitely noticed some people consider it a bit rude if I don't want red meat, as if I am being awkward. Seems a bit behind the times.

This just reminded me, we went away on holiday with DP's sister last year which is when I first noticed it. We were in a supermarket stocking up with our big trolley and whenever I put something in it she would pass comment. This was, if I recall, a tray of vine tomatoes and some organic spinach. The feeling at the time was as if my choices made me 'superior', which reared up again when I said I didn't fancy any pork. That was definitely the vibe. I am far from a snob and only buy organic on occasion.

Sounds like she's a little insecure about her own dietary choices so chose to have a go at yours. Next time, ask her why she's so interested in your eating habits. She's not eating it for you.

I hate it when people do this. They've done it to me all my life. Usually people constantly on a diet criticising me for eating chocolate and asking me if I'm bulimic because I'm slim and don't restrict. So rude. They should mind their own business.

itsmylife7 · 28/05/2024 17:42

Your choice of food sounds lovely OP.

ignore all the cheeky people commenting on your food choices.

I always eat vegetarian when eating out.... even though I'm not vegetarian..... that confuses people.😀

Agii · 28/05/2024 17:47

That's a normal diet and has a variety. I don't understand the meed of 3 persons worth of Pasta and all you can eat roast. Well, I eat more, but less food is better !

Redlarge · 28/05/2024 18:30

It sounds great. Healthy, well rounded, no processed food. You enjoy it. You eat much better than I do and I bet you look good on it too.

WhoGivesaSpit · 28/05/2024 18:40

sounds like lovely food. careful though, this thread will almost certainly trigger the competitive undereating types and it will become a "who eats most like a bird" fest before you know it!

Aswad · 28/05/2024 18:42

Sounds lovely and as long as you’re not losing weight, I don’t see the issue.
think we’re used to eating too much (quantity and bad quality too) tbh.

HooverTheRoof · 28/05/2024 18:42

It's all very healthy but one piece of toast for breakfast and one piece of fruit for lunch isn't very much, are you definitely getting enough calories? People can be really rude, for some reason it's seems to be fair game if you are very slim

Laiku · 28/05/2024 20:04

It's funny because my way of eating just feels natural to me, not restricted at all. I am often a bit wary of ultra processed stuff but don't fully avoid it either. I suppose I like a balance, and I guess that's different to all of us.

I do like the contrast between my leafy greens and my shitty taste in commercial chocolate though..nothing like a Caramel or a stack of Giant Buttons dipped in coffee.

DP's sister is a very good cook, home bakes and knows her onions. I think it's something more complex, not worth going into here. The red meat thing puzzles me a bit, as things have come a long way with different foods over the years.

I don't count cals but have a good idea what my needs are generally, and I certainly snack on stuff like nuts, peanut butter and whatnot, and never feel foggy or tired . Skin's great, possibly due to the nuts...

Compared to others I agree, but I am sedentary in the early part of the day, and work sat down, so am not hungry at the typical time. I adjust accordingly depending what I do, so if I go out in the AM or go hiking on days off, I will pack more in. My body sure let's me know when it's hungry.

Making a note of the flatbread recipe here.

RaininSummer · 28/05/2024 20:29

Your food sounds lovely. I wish I was as sensible as you and pretty much ate more what I need than what I want as I have sedentary job too.

EnglishBluebell · 28/05/2024 20:50

Have you posted to gain 'approval' of your "Mediterranean veggies" & "flatbreads" or just to start a competitive diets thread?

No one here has been competing. Most of us think it’s lovely! 🤷‍♀️

Why would anyone else be upset by what someone chooses to eat? Eat what you want. No one cares!

Pollipops1 · 28/05/2024 20:59

Would you ever mix it up and have an egg for breakfast with toast? I would find it unusual to eat like that every single day but it’s your choice.

Westfacing · 28/05/2024 21:00

Skin's great, possibly due to the nuts...

Yes, of course it is... I'm off!

Pollipops1 · 28/05/2024 21:02

I’ve worked with a lot of people with disordered eating (not accusing you of that at all). The only ones who get comments from others are the ones who do the whole “I’m so full up”, “I can’t believe what I’ve eaten for breakfast”, “I can’t move after that massive salad”, etc.

Jk987 · 28/05/2024 21:05

It's obvious they are taking the piss or are envious because your diet is so healthy. You must know how nutritious it is compared to most people?

Crikeyalmighty · 28/05/2024 21:08

Incredibly healthy diet - although I would be a bit hungry on that in the early afternoon I must admit

mondaytosunday · 28/05/2024 21:24

Sounds delicious. How do people know what you eat? No one knows what I eat day in day out (same two things for brunch in rotation, a bit more variety for dinner).

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/05/2024 14:08

I think that you're really not bothered about the comments, OP. None of your responses express anything along those lines.

I think you wanted to talk about what you eat actually get comments from posters here and to get the maximum number you could.

I hope you've got what you wanted but I find these sorts of threads so disingenuous. I think thread starters have just got more careful and crafty in phrasing but it's so very annoying.
