Sheltered family activities Whitby

Can anyone suggest family activities near Whitby for not great weather? It's due to rain every day and it's also windy and fresh! Trying to make the best of it on the beach but thinking we need to break things up with something under cover.

Whitby museum/captain cook museum.

Sealife centre in Scarborough.

Eden camp is about 45min in the car.

Train museum/York for the day.

Curlewwoohoo · 27/05/2024 17:05

Anyone advise if the steam train is good for the money?

Kids go free in the NYMR :-). If it's dry go up to the carriage sheds at Grosmont or follow the rail trail from grosmont to goathland.

The amusement arcades. One of them has a small ten pin bowling. I used to love arcades when I was young.

There's an on the beach cafe a few miles down the coast. Can't remember the name of it.

Castle Howard has a lovely kids playground down near the lake. You can romp around the gardens and go to the cafe, and it's less than an hour from Whitby. My kids always loved it, rain or shine!

Absolutely, it’s a good day out. Ours glazed over when we told tales of Heartbeat but enjoyed the journey and seeing parts of where Harry Potter was filmed.

It's still £99 to go from Whitby to Pickering though 😱

Wondering about going as far as Goathland and walking to the waterfall, if its OK for the kids.

There's an amazing swimming pool with flumes & so on in Scarborough. It's the best one we've been to out of Center Parcs & Alton Towers. DC were 10 & 8 when we went. Need to pre-book

That's gone up in price! They seem to have done away with the normal fares to give free returns 😳
We went to a great farm near Scarborough which had stuff for all ages https://maps.app.goo.gl/myN4U4P1B4EoUYkV7 https://playdalefarmpark.co.uk/

Alpamare went bust last year, and dont think it will be open - plan is summer holidays.

It's definitely worth looking at the weather inland a bit. The weather is often very different on the York / Middlesbrough side compared to the coast.

Check if the train does a shorter journey ticket? There was an option to just go to Goathland and another stop before. I seem to recall it was under half price. These tickets were only available at the station.

Don't attempt the 'Spout' especially with kids or if there has been any rain at all unless you fancy being rescued by the local mountain rescue ... Or have mountain goat in your DNA.

The NYMR ticket gives you access for 12 months. £49.50/pp .

If you can get to Pickering easily/readily then Beck Isle Museum is lovely.

The museum in Pannet Park in Whitby is a treasure trove and if it is dry there's a lovely play area.

If it's not absolutely tonking it down then Whitby Abbey is great and with loads of grass for burning off energy. If you are feeling energised then approach via the 199 steps. St Mary's church by the Abbey is lovely as well. It has really old boxes pews in it and of course it's where Dracula comes ashore ... This does sound a bit stuffy but it's not really!

Sandsend is lovely. If you are wrapped up and the tide is right it's a great beach.

There's a soft play area just out of Whitby at Ruswarp. (Argh!!!!)

Unfortunately the kids have decided they're terrified of vampires 🙄😱😬 Typical eh!

You can go up on the moors and head to the Moors Centre at Danby, they have holiday activities for kids and trails and suchlike; ditto the Forest centre at Dalby just outside Thornton le Dale. Or potter around Thornton, take the kids to see where that car auction programme thing is made (it impresses some people) or for a walk along the beck.

Curlewwoohoo · 28/05/2024 14:49

Thanks @Vroomfondleswaistcoat we might do one of these tomorrow.
