Is this a consequence of global warming? Do you think there’s going to be more

im a nervous flyer anyway, but this is all really giving me the heebie-jeebies

If anything it should make you less nervous. Those were injured were standing or didn’t have seatbelts on. (The latest one there is someone who describes having to hold his wife down as she was sleeping without her belt fastened.)

Look what a plane can go through and still land safety and undamaged.

Apparently there will be more turbulence die to climate change - I can't remember the reason exactly but I think it's related to more stormy conditions.
I don't like flying either and hate turbulence but I found it comforting that the plane landed unharmed and those wearing seat belts were OK.

It’s the current story of the moment. Give it a few days and it will be something else. A few months ago every single day was about the XL bully.

WaitingfortheTardis · 27/05/2024 10:00

This worried me too, as someone who is generally worried about flying it doesn't take a lot to make that feeling worse. Keeping your seatbelt on is all very well, but realistically you do need to get up sometimes - to use the toilets etc. This means you can't have your seatbelt on.

Also isn't there an increased risk of DVT if you don't walk around? Something else to worry about. I really don't like flying, I just have to keep in mind it will be worth it for a lovely holiday somewhere new.

Strange that it seems to be in the news everyday. I’m also halfway through watching Manifest (very good btw)!

leafybrew · 27/05/2024 10:05

I think it’s God’s way of telling the human race to stop flying so much and increasing global warming.

Or it’s simply due to global warming changing weather systems.

Either way - it’s not great, and no, it doesn’t make me feel that flying is safer.

mitogoshi · 27/05/2024 10:06

Wear your seat belt on the plane unless going to and from toilet. On this latest flight, out of the 12 injured, 6 were cabin crew serving passengers so not strapped in. None of the others injured were wearing belts.

Severe turbulence than cause injuries is rare, especially causing injuries to those strapped in

I think it's to do with climate change making the temperature difference between warm and cold airstreams colliding larger.

Yep, attention will shift onto something inappropriate that a minor celebrity said about something

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 27/05/2024 10:14

The press has nothing better to report
The poor guy that died, that was a big story I agree. Other than that, daily occurrence during warmer weather and certain routes are well know for this

Tow of our kids and some of my siblings are or were freequenst fliers, long haul - via work stuff or hols - they all have stories to tell

Therefore, tents of thousands of flithgts a day, possibly over a million over the year - therefore in the media of 24/7, we will get stories like this

I hate flying and we encountered a severe rain take off and and about 30 seconds in a massive hailstorm - for close to 40 mins, seemed like hours the plane sounded as though it was being machine gunned and the vibrations at time were seriously scary - my OH and son and his family love flying, but everyone on the plane was, appeared scared and very quiet other than the few scremas as the pane serious buffeted

helpfulperson · 27/05/2024 10:22

Is it not related to the increased solar flaring causing the northern light?

Two simple things you can do to reduce your risk. Always wear your seatbelt when seated and only keep out ahat you are using on your tray to minimise flying objects.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/05/2024 10:27

The journey to the airport is far more risky than the actual flight. Incidents like this, make the news, because they are so rare.

That’s because ATM the media have suddenly got their teeth into it and decided it’s newsworthy/click worthy…

Reality is there have been (rare) incidents involving passenger injuries for years/decades…(the claims it’s more definitely and demonstrably more frequent due global warming is still controversial/questionable).

As others have said keep belts on as much as possible is the best protection.

No, its not.

The following probably isn’t a good read for nervous passengers but I’ll offer up the link anyway.

It’s a very old thread on another forum with postings from 20 plus years ago…in fact it’s so old some of the aircraft types mentioned are no longer in service.

I’d suggest it hints at there being nothing new under the sun, it’s mainly the reporting that’s changed:

Because someone died. I was in a plane that hit clear air turbulence about 20 years ago. It was scary! This has always happened but the media have latched on this time because of the poor chap who had a heart attack.

Always keep your seat belt loosely fastened when seated on a plane.
