Do you dress up to go out to restaurants? Gordon Ramsay is...

.. bemoaning the standards of dress at his restaurants. He's complaining that people wear casual clothing, joggers, hoodies etc. I like to dress up to go out to dine, but what do others think?.

I hate to feel overdressed, so tend to err on the side of casual. I’d never wear leggings to a restaurant though - even somewhere like pizza express. But I will often wear jeans.

My 2 nieces in their early 20s usually wear yoga gear - very expensive, very nice but would be construed as very casual.

But why is wearing certain clothes seen as significant and making an effort

Making an effort to do what exactly ?

Who chooses what clothes are acceptable for whichever restaurant?

Why don't people who "like to dress up " just do so ?

Why do sone people think wearing uncomfortable or expensive or ugly clothes is virtuous?

Note with ugly - isn't that part of the point - what I think is ugly you might love - it's a personal thing - why do we have to conform to one persons idea of dressed up ?

Two words: social conditioning.

BIWI · 27/05/2024 09:20

I'll dress how I like to spend my own money, thank you Gordon.

And I bet he's happy to take anyone's money, especially right now.

Gordon Ramsey terrifies me.
I feel that, on first meeting me, he would instinctively sense that I'm not very good at cooking. Then his prey drive would kick in and he'd be standing inches from my face, shouting, like on TV.
I'm not very good at dressing up either. So that's another point against me.

I've not met you but I can tell that from here...

(Look Mum, no swearing today!)

Depends on the situation and type of restaurant. If I’m going out in the evening I’ll dress up and certainly for a nicer restaurant. But sometimes we may go for a walk and stop for lunch, then obviously I’d be more in leggings and walking boots.

wogjalr · 27/05/2024 09:23

Given the fact it feels like the majority of his restaurants are in Vegas it's hardly surprising dress code is a little more casual there, or can be.

QueensOfTheVolksAge · 27/05/2024 09:23

I agree with dressing smartly. My rule is, try not to be any scruffier than the wait staff 😅

Although I'm sure I recently saw photos of Gordon on Instagram, wearing a black jacket paired with ugly casual running trainers?! So he's not exactly following his own advice, proper midlife crisis dad outfit.

midgetastic · 27/05/2024 09:25

With any social conditioning we need to think is it worthwhile or over restrictive / exclusive

Being socially conditioned to not play loud muisc on a train is one thing , wearing what everyone else does seems somewhat different? Although wearing something that covers the "privates" perhaps that's a conditioning concept I would be less happy to have challenged

RJnomore1 · 27/05/2024 09:26

I think what constitutes as dressed up has changed too for some young people. Balenciaga hoodies and joggers, costing a small fortune for example, or boohoo men jeans and shirt? One is considerable more expensive than the other but still viewed differently - unless you’re in that group. Likewise the girls, I’m not picking on the guys.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/05/2024 09:34

Whatever people think of Gordon Ramsey's TV persona there's no doubting he's a very talented chef. So talented in fact that over his career he has won 17 Michelin stars. Only two people have ever earned more.

KateDelRick · 27/05/2024 09:35

I didn't know that, @JaninaDuszejko
He's obviously very talented and successful.

As long as they don't smell I can't get worked up about what other people are wearing.

Saschka · 27/05/2024 09:38

I don’t wear joggers or hoodies so my baseline level of dressiness is probably high enough to escape Gordon’s notice. But no I don’t wear anything special to go to a restaurant. Usually work clothes, so smart casual/business casual.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 27/05/2024 09:40

I would love to go to RGR. (Sadly no chance)

The request seems polite and reasonable, giving general parameters of a dress code.

The cost of a hoodie is irrelevant. I have outdoor hobby gear that costs more than most ‘wedding guest ‘ outfits I see posted here, but it wouldn’t be suitable for my fantasy visit to RGR.

I live in a seaside town so sometimes see more of people than I'd choose but last week was a bit of a one off. Young woman, late teens?, walking down the street with a skirt so short the bottom half of her buttocks were on show. For a moment I thought she'd forgotten her knickers but as she pulled her skirt up to scratch her backside I realised she was wearing a thong, just none of it on show. If she was looking to get noticed she did manage it as people were taking a second look. Not sure what a front view looked like. Before anyone tells me I shouldn't be looking she was walking ahead of me down a crowded bit of pavement (tables and chairs and shop displays taking up more of the pavement than should be allowed) so I did need to look ahead as I pushed buggy.

Local shops and restaurants/bars generally have notices up about wearing tops, sweaty beer bellies burnt bright red is not an attractive look and people must be in agony with some of the levels of burning.

Each to their own, my bum is definitely too old to be put on display and I haven't got a beer belly to flash so they aren't looks I'm going to adopt.

Did you leave the veil at home, @beguilingeyes ? 😉

There was never a veil 😀

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/05/2024 09:50

I very rarely do ‘dressed up’ anyway, so usually it’ll be some sort of smart - or smart-ish - casual.

KateDelRick · 27/05/2024 09:52

Gorgeous, @beguilingeyes 😍 !
I love what the other two ladies are wearing as well. There's not enough red clothing, imo.

I must admit I was surprised when I saw the documentary on tv what people were turning up in. I do think people make less effort to dress up and go somewhere nice but if you want that for your establishment it's as simple as setting a dress code

wogjalr · 27/05/2024 09:54

You can argue what constitutes smart causal till the cows come home, but surely no one thinks joggers are suitable for any sitting down restaurants?

I do. They can look really good and they can look smart too.

gingercat02 · 27/05/2024 09:57

It's hilarious that people think Gordon Ramsay restaurants aren't high-end. His group of restaurants has 17 Michelin stars, and 5 of those are in London. Yes, he has more mainstream ones, too.

I wouldn't dream of going anywhere in joggers and a hoodie.

For a little local Italian or Indian place jeans and a nice top, somewhere fancier smart trousers or skirt or dress feels more appropriate, but we live near Newcastle upon Tyne where everyone still dresses up a but for a night out.

SuzySizzle · 27/05/2024 10:00

@beguilingeyes
A beautiful dress. You look amazing.

PToosher · 27/05/2024 10:01

If I went to a 3 Michelin starred restaurant smartly dressed and everyone else there was in jogging bottoms and hoodies, my sense of 'occasion' would be diminished.
