East facing garden

I'm looking at buying a house with an east facing garden. I know these typically get sun in the morning. We viewed at 2.30 pm and it still had sun in the afternoon. Are they as shady as everyone says? I might ask to go view again about 5 pm. I don't think it is a deal breaker for us. We have a south facing garden and it is boiling in the summer (live on the south coast)! My son loves being outside and I half think a cooler garden will actually be better used as it won't be so hot and I won't worry about him so much.

Our garden is east facing. It means we get the sun shining in our dining room for breakfast in the.morning and the sun in the living room in the afternoon. I like it.

Have considered moving the garden to the south?

Our front garden is north east and gets sun up to about 2/3 pm in summer, I grow all sorts in it and quite often retreat there in the afternoon when our south facing back garden gets too hot. If it was longer it would get sun all day just about.

it’s also lovely for a morning cuppa. And we gets loads of light in the front of the house in the morning.

I think it depends to some extent on the size and length of your garden, and what is adjoining it (any high walls or fences). Our garden is east facing and small to medium sized, and the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it goes shady early in the evening. We lose most of the sun by about 6pm, right at the back, but if the garden was longer, or we didn't have a wall on one side, it would be much better.

Ours is east facing, never really thought about it. Previous owners were passionate gardeners and everything thrived. It’s sunny enough for me! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also why wouldn’t you want to look out of your kitchen or whatever onto the garden and see the most gorge sunrises? Such a pleasure. Then go out the front and watch the sunsets 😄

I have an east facing back garden. There's sun all day until 6 pm. It's never bothered me. That's more than enough sun for me. I suppose if you wanted to sit out later in the day it wouldn't be good but it wouldn't put me off a house just for that reason.

Our last 2-houses have had east facing gardens (33-years) and it suits us.
Full sun in the morning, after midday the rear of the house starts to loose direct sunlight although it is much later in the afternoon that the garden itself starts to get shade with the end of the garden keeping the sun until much later into the evening.
Of course a huge amount depends on how long your garden is and how tall the house.

We would not want the sun on the patio in the evening as it would make it too hot, it is great that at the end of a hot day the patio can be a cool haven.
In our previous house we had a raised patio & decking area with planters at the far end of the garden but although absolutely beautiful, rarely used as we don't like sitting in direct sunlight.

Our garden is east facing and it does get shaded by the house from late afternoon and is completely in shade by early evening. Everyone in our street in our side has put a bench/lawn area etc in the front garden for the evening sun.

By the evening ie 5pm my garden is in the shade. I very rarely get to sit outside on those occasional warm nights as it is too chilly. Lovely in the morning. Depends what you want. Check also shade from neighbours houses.
