Is a midge free holiday in Scotland possible?

I'm just back from a weeks camping holiday in Arran. From my research, I thought that the end of May was just the start of the midge season and that staying near the coast meant that they wouldn't be too bad.
Despite covering up and using Smidge on all exposed skin and a head net, I've come home covered in bites. Apart from that we had a great holiday and fell in love with the place.
Is there a secret to avoiding the little buggers or is it something you just have to put up with if you want to enjoy a holiday in Scotland when the weather is half decent?

Were you at the Glen Rosa campsite? I've always thought that must be a midge magnet. We were in Arran last week (may have passed each other!) and encountered no midges, but we were staying with my Mum and didn't spend much time near any burns, bogs etc.

We did Glen Rosa, Lochranza and North Sannox - very midgy at all three locations, even at North Sannox where we camped as close to the beach as we could get!

we went to Lewis and Harris and didn’t really notice any midges. We were there 2021 in July and had several days of great weather. Not sure if it’s different as it’s further out?

East coast doesn’t get midges in the same way. The beaches aren’t as nice but there’s lots to do.

Go to the other side, Crail has almost no midgies

Following, not so much to reassure you but for reassurance.
We’re mainland and newly moved in 70 miles away from you, they’re definitely around! I’ve not been bitten yet and I’m normally very susceptible.

It's been a wet, warm winter. If we get proper cold, dry weather for a decent stretch they sometimes don't appear until the end of May.

Coastal campsites are better- Seal shore at kildonnan in arran used to be great but I think it's all camper vans now?
Dumfries and Galloway coastal sites are good too.
North West was the worst I have ever encountered- it was a wild and windy exposed site and some days you could barely leave the tent
