Darkened midgie bites- really upset.

Does anyone have experience of this? My toddler got bitten badly by midgies a couple of weeks ago and the spots are getting darker rather than fading. They are not raised any more, he just has a crop of dark red circles on his face/forehead and it looks awful.

I feel dreadful. We've been putting Smidge/Avon on since then every day. He didn't get any midgie bites last year or year before despite being outdoors a lot.

I'm worried as even with plenty of Smidge on he's still getting bitten at nursery where they spend the majority of the day outside.

Will they fade? Is there anything I can do to help. It looks hellish and I'm heartbroken at the state of his wee face.

Does he wear sunscreen? Scars from cuts/bites/pox etc tend to darken if exposed to sun.

Hi yes, he wears suncream. Suncream and hat. I've had midgie bites over the years myself and I've never seen anything like it. Will he have these red marks forever now?

Genuinely debating the GP tomorrow but thought that was maybe ridiculous over midgie bites.

Up until today they looked like red raised bites that I thought would fade. But now they just suddenly look even worse.

Sure they were bites and not something like chicken pox?

If they were bites, and he had an allergic reaction to them, or scratched them, they will last longer. They'll fade eventually. In future, try using an antihistamine cream to help stop the itching and swelling. He'll be less likely to scratch them.

I didn't think chicken pox as they came up immediately after being in the woods and I felt those midgies too. I bought Smidge that day and put it on him every day now.

He also has no bites on his body. Just face, mostly forehead and a few on his neck. The forehead ones look dreadful.

I didn't get anything from the chemist at the time as he's not been bothered by them in the slightest. No itching or complaining. It's only today they suddenly seem so dark.

Also, nursery seemed convinced it was midgies as they have them in the garden and could see he got a couple more bites while there. I put it on before he goes and have asked them to top it up midday as well now.

Can 1 year olds have antihistamines? I am allergic to midge bites and if I get bitten the marke are there for ages I take antihistamines. He might be allergic to the bites If that makes sense. I don't think it's silly to take him to the Dr's.

Mrsjayy · 26/05/2024 19:12

Oh and put calamine cream on them.

Thanks, he's over 2 and a half. I don't know if he can have antihistamine, never needed it before. I will take him to the chemist as a first port of call tomorrow. He has sudocrem on at the moment but it seems pointless as the bites are old now.

I never considered him being allergic as he hasn't fussed at all about them so I just thought "they'll fade in a few days" as that's my experience of midgie bites
