They do make a terrible mess, mine are in a run and there isn’t a single blade of grass. They would eat literally anything they can get to, you would have no plants left at all. The breeds I have are large and strong and I could imagine them being aggressive and intimidating if they were effectively wild.

I did live near another village in Norfolk many years ago where there was a roundabout known as the Chicken Roundabout where a feral flock lived and they were a huge problem as they would run out in front of cars. I think the council removed them eventually.

Problem is people dump cockerels and old hens in the woods rather than neck them. Im amazed a local fox hasn’t sorted them out to be honest.

NoraLuka · 26/05/2024 18:26

🤣 Never heard of this happening before! I only have 3 chickens but if we’re ever late feeding them they act like Birds the Hitchcock film is an instruction video, I can easily imagine that 100 of them would be a torment.

In case anyone thinks I’m mistreating them “late” in their minds means any time after the crack of dawn, so that’s quite early at this time of year!

Exactly.

Foxes would make light work of any chickens on the loose usually.

Then maybe I'm wrong and all these years it's just been the fact that they enjoy the challenge of getting into our hen house.

Maybe feral chickens are too hard for a fox to corner! I can imagine 100 of them would be scary, they are basically mini dinosaurs aren’t they?

There’s a chicken rehoming person I used to follow on fb who drives round the country scooping up dumped feral chickens. She’s always worried sick about the fox beating her to them. Don’t think she’s ever had a group that big though.

There's not many foxes in rural areas anymore. If those chickens were in London they soon be fox dinners.

Bungay! I used to drive past those chickens every day.

This is hilarious and clearly written by a none chicken person. I find it hard to believe there are 100 chickens are on the loose in Snettisham I was there last weekend didn’t see a single chicken. Like someone else said there are a lot of foxes around I’m amazed they are surviving on their own.

I do keep chickens and they are buggers at scratching up your garden and the cockerels can be arses. I want a video not a stock photo of some sweet looking hens!

That's very true. We are rural and I mostly only see them in January when it's mating time (they like to use my garden)

People in London seem to see them every day.

There's not 100 but there are bloody loads of them - barely any of them have their wings clipped so they basically live in the trees which is why you might not have seen that many. Trust me, they're there and it's a tad freaky! Far too many cockerals - the hen to cockaral ratio is appalling - sure I don't need to elaborate on what is happening regularly to the poor distressed hens. Some woman (who I've sadly had dealings with, swears like a trooper and doesnt even live in Snettisham! ) comes regularly and dumps actually food on the road thinking she's being caring towards the chickens. We're talking the likes of her left over spaghetti bolognaise. Would like to know if she'd like me to go to her road and dump spaghetti bolognaise all over it for her car to drive through. Aside from anything else, makes the place look a bloody mess. Locals are saying it's non locals complaining about country noises. It's not. It's caring people saying these chickens are out of control and NEED looking after properly. People do just rock up with chickens they don't want any more and add them into the mix. Crazy 'caring woman' is actually causing harm If she actually cared, she'd taken a few of them aware and care for them properly. Cockerals are getting into fights - could do with seeing the vet for eg. There are not lots of foxes around sadly but because their wings aren't clipped, they simply hop up into the trees anyway. Furthermore, because they're all now literally running rampant, they've eroded the bank on one side of the road and it caused flooding earlier this year.
