Weird 'thing' in vision

storminabuttercup · 26/05/2024 09:20

Probably the oddest thread I've started but ive googled and can't find anything, maybe as I'm not sure what to google so maybe Mumsnet can help.
This has only happened a few times so I'm not worried just wondered if anyone had similar thing.
On waking if I look at a blank surface like the curtains or wall I see a circle shape, inside that circle there's either what looks like letters or symbols, but they are moving around, they are there for maybe thirty seconds to a minute and would be there if for example I close my eyes and look at something else, they appear there too. It's only happened on waking, be that in the morning or early hours.
Anyone else had this?

Migraine aura?

I did wonder the first time if that was what it was but I rarely suffer with migraines and didn't afterwards.

How old are you? I had this and it’s from dry eyes from the menopause. Yes the fucking menopause even effects your eyes. 🙄

40, so very possible I guess. Now you mention it my eyes do feel 'dry' today which is odd as there are usually streaming from bloody hay fever! It's a strange feeling isn't it?

I get the aura but often not the migraine so it is possible

Grownyourownway · 26/05/2024 09:33

I get this too. I do suffer from aura migraines but get this at separate times as well.

There is even a Facebook group called Bright Spot When Blinking, with members suffering from a similar thing.

Mine were worse when I was very anaemic and got better after iron infusions.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 26/05/2024 09:34

Ocular/visual migraines last up to half an hour and there is usually no headache. Can be pretty scary though. Are you having a stressful time at the moment?

CrepuscularCritter · 26/05/2024 09:35

Could be migraine aura, could be floaters. Floaters are more noticeable for me against a pale and uniform surface. Might be worth looking that up and getting some drops for dry eyes.

storminabuttercup · 26/05/2024 09:49

This is all so helpful thank you.

A little stress, my emotions are all over, cry at the drop of the hat etc.

DP is going to the shops soon so will get him to pick up some drops.

Off to read up on some of the terms you mention.

Go and have an eye test with an OCT scan just to be sure. It may be a migraine or could be something like central serous retinopathy which isn't an emergency but needs a referral to the eye hospital.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 26/05/2024 10:47

Yes agree to getting an eye check. Mention this. Big opticians like specsavers will also have equipment to check inside and behind the eye

Who knew eh everything just dries up into a husk! I use bright eye eye drops to stop them getting bloody dusty,

Anyway I think you might need to go to the optition get your eyes checked out .

DeclineandFall · 26/05/2024 10:49

My son gets this. He has had all the scans and an MRI. They just say its probably migraine, however it could be related to hynagogic/hypnapompic hallucinations. He's totally hormonal as he's 15 so it could be hormones

EBearhug · 26/05/2024 10:52

Definitely get it checked. It's probably fine, but there's a chance it isn't, and no one here can tell.

storminabuttercup · 26/05/2024 11:00

Good shout. I'm due an eye test anyway (years and years due one)

I have something similar to this and it's a large floater, like a white halo shape. It never fully goes away, some days it's much worse than others.

CallThatCloudy · 26/05/2024 13:14

Hi, I've had all kinds of floaters, spots, scotomas, retinal migraines, migraine auras, you name it...

If you're seeing this every morning, I don't think it is going to be any kind of migraine. PVD (Posterior Vitreous Detachment) is inevitable with aging (the jelly in the eye changes and pulls away from the retina, often causing floaters, potentially causes retinal tears), but you're young for this, although you can have it happen younger with short-sightedness. Didn't know it was anything to do with astigmatism. The floaters associated with PVD can be circular, the letters or symbols in the circle are probably your brain trying to make sense of what it's seeing. You might have had a PVD, or it might just be random floaters.

Anyway, the optician is your first port of call. They should see you as a priority if you give them a call, I'm sure they'll put your mind at reat. If anything needs more investigation, they'll refer. Floaters don't go away but they do settle down and your brain gets used to them.

Good luck!

(Sorry, re-read what I wrote - don't panic about PVD, its very common)

UsernameRedacted · 26/05/2024 13:52

If at all possible don't drive to the optician, they might want to put drops into your eye and it can affect your vision for a few hours afterwards.
