Just like the title says. What have you stopped buying because it's become too expensive?
I'll go first.

Lamb

Unjustifiable · 25/05/2024 18:35

Takeaways
Less eating out
Clothes
Buying full price
Less premium beauty
Less mani/pedi
Home stuff
Shopping in store for food (cheaper online)

Considering cheaper holiday next year, less hair appointments.

Won’t compromise on kids days out.

XiCi · 25/05/2024 18:40

We get less takeaways and eat out less. Haven't bought lamb for ages. The price of olive oil is horrendous. It used to be much cheaper in Aldi, but I popped in there last week and it was twice the price it used to be.

Sasqwatch · 25/05/2024 18:44

Fish and Chips
Olive Oil

Nothing. I shop as normal.

doneandone · 25/05/2024 19:02

Definitely cut down on takeaways and eating out, the prices have skyrocketed! Also try not to buy many branded items as most of those are unjustifiably overpriced.

AnnieSnap · 25/05/2024 19:07

Bloody Hell, this is a depressing thread. It’s awful that so many people are struggling (I hope no one in that position is daft enough to vote Tory). I’m more careful, but still have Sky TV. I have ditched the movie channels because I didn’t watch much on them and I’ve ditched Netflix (robbing buggers), but still have everything else, including the full sports package. I still by some main brand food when it tastes better than store brand. I buy Alpen because DH and I enjoy it. I buy Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Cornflakes because they taste so much better than the own brand version. I also buy the shockingly expensive Sensodyne Toothpaste because it’s the only one that keeps my sensitive teeth entirely happy. We’re vegetarians so fruit and veg is very important to us. I do buy out of season varieties, including berries year around.

I think carefully before I buy anything other than food and often decide not to make a purchase after some thought, but we do prioritise foodstuffs. We rarely eat out, don’t drink alcohol, or eat takeaways, but that is lifestyle, rather than making savings. We feel the financial squeeze, but I realise that compared to many others, we are lucky because we have enough to still make choices.

Areolaborealis · 25/05/2024 19:17

Kids liquid paracetamol. I crush half a tablet and mix with honey.

Saved a fortune.

Fridaysgirl17 · 25/05/2024 19:26

Hair appointments, clothes & shoes.I buy trainers but only when mine are well & truly busted, I burst the toe of my last ones somehow, I tried to fix it but no luck. Reduced subscriptions, no magazines, branded juice, crisps, anything really apart from a few bits my kids know the difference like fish fingers & chicken. No pudding but I will have a small block of Tesco vanilla ice cream in as my 7 year old will sometimes ask for some. Cosmetics as in make up, very rare I buy any now, perfume (I ask for it for birthdays etc)

usernother · 25/05/2024 19:27

Stopped buying Magazines a few years ago. Mainly because they are rubbish now but also cost. Paper copies of newspapers. The only food I'm no longer buying is salmon.

DoingJustFine · 25/05/2024 19:33

I still don’t get why food is so expensive. It can’t all be Brexit, not with the Tesco big boss doubling his salary (to £10million) to reward their outstanding profits.

it’s just price-gouging, surely? Toxic capitalism, meaning the ones at the top just get richer and richer, despite the ones nearer the bottom being unable to afford to buy anything anymore. Right?

Mademetoxic · 25/05/2024 19:41

BeaRF75 · 25/05/2024 14:52

Not stopped buying anything, but a few things listed here I have never bought in 40 years, ie joints of meat, takeaways, fabric softener, whole chickens, fizzy drinks...probably other stuff.

But I spend a fortune on cheese, coffee, bottled water, M&S food. Life is too short not to buy the things we like, but there are loads of things we're not fussed about, so we don't buy 'em.
And holidays are sacred - I'd live off gruel, if I had to, in order to still have holidays.

Bottled water .... you can get water from the tap!
If you don't like the taste there's filtered jugs you can buy
The plastic waste from it all 😭

KnitnNatterAuntie · 25/05/2024 19:42

Magazines . . . . I used to love all the 'home' ones and sometimes the cooking/baking ones too but I avoid that aisle now

QuestionAir · 25/05/2024 19:51

Another one who has stopped hairdressers appointments after being told that a full head of hilights and a cut in a hairdressers I used to be able to afford had gone up to £280 !!! I honestly thought they were joking …..

Invested £30 on Amazon in hairdressing supplies and several hours of youtube tutorials later I attempted my own. Far from perfect but not bad for a first attempt. And actually it inspired me to do it again …..

Are bananas expensive? They are one of the cheapest fruits here.

Indeed. I'm reading this thread and thinking, how can it be that I'm still able to afford most of those things on my modest teaching pension?

OnlyTheBravest · 25/05/2024 21:04

Not much at the moment home/food magazines, olive oil and fish & chips.
Probably going to cut down on eating out/takeaways at £30 per person (inc delivery fees) it is just not worth it anymore. Plus it is not as tasty as it used to be.

Hotttchoc · 25/05/2024 21:07

I am really cutting down on buying Starbucks or Nero because it costs £4 and is calories I don't need.

Lurpack is too expensive and I don't notice a difference.

I find this thread rather bizarre considering on MN any thread about casual dresses will have people posting about £300 dresses and every day jumper will be £150! But,on the other hand, they can't afford bananas anymore.

TeamPolin · 25/05/2024 21:19

Takeaways. They are so expensive now and just not worth the money.

My DH tried to persuade me to pay £40 for a couple of artisan type pizzas to be delivered the other day 😂. Madness.

I paid £35 for 2 fish 2 chicken nuggets and 2 portions of chips last night.... what on earth! I have now vowed to not have takeaways anymore!

What are you buying instead of Lurpack that tastes the same? That and Anchor are very expensive now.

I find Lurpak is on offer a lot so I just stock up when it is.

Frostynight · 25/05/2024 21:55

Lamb. I've gone in several times with it my list, but I just can't do it.

Olive oil, meals out.

And stamps. I don't send cards anymore.
