If you work part time in the nhs are you entitled to unsocial hours payments?

Band 5, 15 hours per week. 5 of those hours worked on a Sunday. Will I be entitled to unsocial hours payment for those 5 hours or does it only apply to staff who work a 37.5 hour week? TiA.

Yes you're definitely entitled to unsocial pay.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/05/2024 19:13

Should be entitled to them. It’s about when you worked the hours not how many hours you do.

kiwiane · 23/05/2024 19:16

Yes - look at NHS Employers website and search for unsocial hours - it says it applies to part-time staff

valentinoandme · 23/05/2024 19:18

If it's your first month's pay though, you'll get your unsocial pay next month.

LittleRebelGirl · 23/05/2024 19:18

Yes you are.

Newbeginningsandhappy · 23/05/2024 19:20

Depends on your job. As an AHP I wasn’t.

Snowblossom171 · 23/05/2024 19:22

Thanks everyone. My manager says that unsocial hours payments are only available to full time staff. So part time staff who work some of their hours in the evenings or weekends will get a standard pay rate.

I've looked online but I can't find a definite answer.

I'm a part time AHP and I certainly do, just don't get overtime rates, enhanced hours are the same however.

That’s wrong. I’m contracted for 26 and I get unsociable hours payments. I don’t get overtime for the additional hrs I work during a regular weekday hours until I hit 37.5 but weekends have always been paid extra.

CharlotteFlax · 23/05/2024 19:46

Your manager is wrong and seems like a typical dick NHS manager tbh!

I work 24 hours per week and get all enhancements for unsocial hours.

There is an email address for can write to and ask - [email protected]

Snowblossom171 · 23/05/2024 20:55

Thanks everyone. Yep, he's a dick alright!

I've always worked some of my hours over the weekend and been paid unsociable hours for it. He's new to the department and announced that I've been being paid wrongly- unsociable hours payments are only for full time staff, otherwise everyone working part time would want to work evenings/weekends for the extra money. That's what he said. With complete conviction too.

100% yes. I used to work for NHS PT and always received the unsocial hours enhancements because the hours you are working are unsocial no matter how many you do in a week.

You do not get paid 1.5/double time for overtime worked until you have worked 37.5hrs in a week at plain time. It sounds like your manager is mixing them up

Houseplanter · 23/05/2024 20:58

He's confused over time rates with special duty.

AFAIK part time staff don't have overtime until they exceed 37.5 hours

prescribingmum · 23/05/2024 21:00

Lots of people working PT do choose to work nights/weekends for the extra money. There is nothing wrong with that - the hours are unsocial. That is literally all there is to it.

Read the Agenda for Change documents - it is all very clearly documented on there. I recommend anyone in NHS familiarises themselves with it and learns the difficult parts because managers like to enforce all sorts of nonsense they are not allowed to

I only used to work nights and weekends for child care reasons! Your manager IS a dick!

FTMFML · 23/05/2024 22:17

Another yes in Scotland.
Your boss sound an ass.

Same, Ive worked weekends to save on childcare during the week.

When your shifts are entered into whichever roster software they use, payroll should automatically apply the enhancements. In my experience, managers never get involved with that part

If there is a chance he may try stop it, get in touch with HR so they can resolve it on your behalf

I'm part time, I work weekends a lot and I get paid more for Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. For this reason, everyone in my department likes working weekends! And we are all part time.

This is the conditions of service handbook. The part you want is section 2(England).

2.17 Part time staff working less than 37.5 hours a week will be eligible for unsocial hours payments.

He’d have to be a total idiot not to understand something stated that clearly.

Overtime is only for full time employees. Unsocial is for everyone (in my trust you don’t get it until after 9pm so you got 10 hours of a 12 hour night and any time at weekends - Sundays and BHs pay more than Saturdays). Your new boss is wrong, don’t let him tell you otherwise! Policies are probably on your intranet but I’d contact payroll to double check too. Don’t want him demanding money back from you!
