How has AI impacted your job so far?

I work in advertising, a large part of my role up until now has been copy writing. AI now writes all our content and I proofread it. Our clients don't know this, rightly or wrongly. It has been a huge time saving and my role has changed significantly.

Curious to know how AI is changing other industries

Bumping this as same question.

velvetcoat · 03/08/2024 08:05

It hasn't impacted it even a tiny bit. I work in a therapeutic role which supports vulnerable individuals on a face to face basis.

I'd be very worried if my role was replaced by AI and I dont see that ever happening.

CormorantStrikesBack · 03/08/2024 08:05

As a lecturer I use it to partly write some lecture content, to write assignment briefs and to think up seminar activities.

Worrieditsamistake · 03/08/2024 08:06

Hugely. I'm a product marketing director and it's doubled my productivity, if not more.

I have chatgpt open as standard in the same way I do Outlook. Use it multiple times a day.

Same. Work in marketing content writing and at the moment it takes me an hour to do what used to take 5. Great at the moment but I'm very aware that this can only mean my work with dry up at some point. No idea what will happen then.

piefacedClique · 04/08/2024 09:18

Hugely in teaching to differentiate resources, adapt readability of texts, summarise large amounts of text to be useful in class, suggest activities, create multiple choice quizzes out of class content the list goes on and on and on.

Students use it all the time to cheat - either by writing all or part of assignments using it. They are losing the ability to understand some concepts because they get aid to give them the answer instead of working through problems (arguably this is no different to using a calculator where once we used to maths by hand, but that is yet to be seen).

I have to out in extra work to sort out all of the above.

I never use it for content or generating things because by the time I have edited it and made it usable (and checked for errors), I might as well have done it myself.

I can see where it might be useful, but still struggling to see the love in my areas of use. When I see ai generated content (when it’s possible to notice, then it’s very clear) I cringe.

I am very IT literate and am if the generation where everything has always been new. Called a dinosaur by the younger generation, but have always had to be open to learning and using new technology and am not 'fearful' of it (usual disclaimer I have to make).

Overall it has increased my workload, not decreased it.

bluecomputerscreen · 04/08/2024 09:32

so far as if you have a toddler beside you who 'helps' cooking...

Similar to this. We now have software which gives student work a percentage of AI generated - some students are submitting work that scores 99% AI. That then leads to a whole host of problems, and extra work in terms of comparing that submission with their others (if there are any depending on where you are in the semester) and potentially a malpractice investigation. I also agree that students don’t necessarily understand because they are not actually learning, which causes problems down the line.

There are a few bloggers/content creators I follow who obviously now use it and their “writing” is so noticeably different I can’t believe brands consider it authentic UGC.

SunnyDays776 · 04/08/2024 09:42

I work in marketing and don't use it to write copy because it's always so obviously AI generated. However it is very useful for coming up with ways to reword or shorten copy.

I've used it a little bit in Photoshop as well to edit photos, but some of the attempts are hilarious and I usually end up having to do it manually.

Yes. We use this software. Even this is not perfect at all. We have practised with it and submitted (our own) 100 % real or fake work as a training experiment and it not always accurate.

I feel that air should continue in the scientific/ medical/ technological fields (where things are more black and white), but in the creative fields…

Within reason, if you’re using an to generate creative content, then you’re not really doing the job anymore (sorry). Whether that matters or not is to be seen.

Megifer · 04/08/2024 09:48

I can say it impacted one business negatively when I put some content they wrote into nogpt as I suspected it was AI generated and it came back 93% AI written.

They finally admitted it was AI once i screenshared me pasting it into nogpt, then binned them off on the same call. Cost them about £50k worth of future business and now I use a freelancer at a fraction of the cost 😃

I think this is a good, balanced way to use it as a professional.

Students learn from rewording things, editing and shortening (I work with languages including English).

I see automatic translation apps being advertised and wonder what will happed with languages in the (distant?) future. Maybe we won’t need to learn them, but we learn so much more than the language when we learn another language.

We have someone at work who uses ai to write so much. It’s embarrassingly obvious. If you can’t be bothered to write it, I can’t be bothered to read it.

Beezknees · 04/08/2024 09:49

It hasn't yet but I'm sure it will eventually.

Madameprof · 04/08/2024 09:50

So far, not at all. I teach French. Even the best automated translation does a rubbish job compared with an actual person who speaks the language. People who come to me having done Duolingo (I'm aware that's not AI) for two years still can barely put together a sentence. I don't see AI taking over language teaching or translation any time soon.

In terms of using AI for marketing/social media etc I must admit I've not tried it much because the few times I have it was as much work editing what it came up with as just writing it myself. I can see how people without good grammar and linguistic skill could find it useful though.

PurpleWhirple · 04/08/2024 09:51

Not at all. I'm a civil servant. Our legal department has banned it and it is disabled on all work IT equipment.

AShortName · 04/08/2024 09:55

I’m a bit fed up with the hard sell for ai (in education). Anything other than a room full of 'wow's and we're dinosaurs that don’t really understand, but they need to spend time in education to really understand.

Blisterly · 04/08/2024 10:03

It’s vastly improved health and safety, shorted admin and other boring processes and created new jobs and skills. I’m all in favour!

May I ask how it's improved health and safety?

ikujslf · 20/03/2025 07:49

Mostly added to my workload as I have to risk assess it, and weigh up the ethical considerations.

Iceache · 20/03/2025 07:54

Teacher (KS2) and I use it sporadically to generate example texts or give me example questions for a concept I want to teach. It reduces the time I have to spend hunting for resources (and a lot of online resources are rubbish). I have to check everything it generates, but I’d do that if I were recycling another resource anyway. I find AI useful but it doesn’t impact my job hugely really

Snafoo · 20/03/2025 08:03

I've just finished a postgrad and it's been great for analysing past papers and generating example exam questions for me to practice ahead of the exams. Caught one of my lecturers patterns and generated a paper that was almost identical to the one we were given. I put in my notes on certain topics and asked it to generate likely questions as well. Cut my study time in half and I got excellent marks.

HowardTJMoon · 20/03/2025 08:07

I've tried using it for programming but for anything but the most common of tasks what it came back with was near useless. Ask it to build a basic website then sure, it's got a million examples to draw on so it can come up with something usable. Ask it for something less common and it's got no real corpus to draw from so it flounders.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 20/03/2025 08:07

My job is web editing, as in creating and editing webpages, mainly using content sent to me by colleagues. The software I use to do this doesn’t have AI integrated (yet!). So I don’t use AI much for the core of my job. I use it for redrafting tricky emails and creating fun images though.

Dustmylemonlies · 20/03/2025 08:09

It hasn't. I work in a fairly niche industry and my role is very people-orientated. ATM AI couldn't do what I do.
