Urgh! I will still live in a tory seat, how to make peace with that?

150 years of Conservatives here, no chance of Labour getting in. Closest competitor is Lib Dems but still a huge gap. Though we do have Lib dem councillors in now which was a shock last year so maybe I should put my vote there?

And no I can't move house!

A lot of people say this, but I genuinely don't think that we've seen anything like this before. The country is in an absolute state

L1ttledrummergirl · 23/05/2024 08:25

Tactical voting- it makes a difference.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/05/2024 08:27

Maybe addressing your intolerance of other people's choices might a good start?

The Tories currently have very very few safe seats. Even in typically Tory areas. What looks like a big gap between Tory & LD could be made much smaller or even overturned. Especially since voters have got much more savvy about dealing with the system we have and voting tactically.

The first thing to do is start looking at the tactical voting sites and work out where your vote is best placed.

I live in a Tory stronghold.

I always have just different ones apart from a brief spell in one area where the 'save the hospital' independent won, saved the hospital then got voted out in favour of a Tory afterwards!

I didn't choose where I was brought up but I have chosen the areas I've moved to since and I go on what the area has to offer aside from its politics as otherwise it's a great place.

I like living in a semi-rural community and that tends to mean it's Tory MP - but because of the make up of the constituency the councillors all tend to be Green locally and pretty good, and Tory the more farmy it gets.

I'm not, and I vote accordingly.

I am sorry but this is not just a silly little choice.

If you vote for the Tories, you are voting for the end of the NHS. You are voting for millions of working people being in relative poverty because of the cost of living. You are voting for the destruction of our public transport networks. You are voting for children to live in poverty. For young people to be locked out of the housing market. For our doctors and nurses to leave because their pay is so pitiful.

You cannot vote conservative and have a clear conscience.

How on earth is it intolerant to express dissatisfaction with your local MP?

She isn’t walking round the constituency with a banner saying “Tory voters are scum” or anything - she’s discussing it on a discussion forum.

Odd post.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/05/2024 08:34

Our local MP has been an excellent constituency MP. Regrettably he is standing down after more than 25 years with a significant majority. The new Conservative candidate is very sound. There is a chance the Lib Dems will take the seat.

No, OP just "can't make her peace" with that.

We have Angela Rayner for the rest, you know, calling people scum.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/05/2024 08:43

I used to live in a very safe Tory constituency. They could put a blue rosette on a wheelie bin and it would still get elected. The funny thing is since Covid, the COL, no one being able to get a NHS dentist in the area, and many shops and amenities closing down people have started to get very vocal about the Tories. As dollars to donuts they’ll vote the Tory MP in next time, without a care in the world though.

Tell.me you have privilege without telling me you have privilege. 🙄

A century of tory though that sounds quite a privileged area you live in 🙄. Vote lib dem they might not get in but at least you vote went elsewhere.

LoreleiG · 23/05/2024 08:49

I felt the same about my safe Tory county when I first moved here as I moved from somewhere very liberal but it’s a lovely place to live so I got over myself and accepted people vote differently to me for their own reasons.

I notice now that people sometimes use how people vote in their area at elections as a strange badge of honour when the important thing is just to vote whatever the likely outcome. Anyway, stranger things have happened. One of our boroughs recently went to Labour in an OMG moment.

Would you be satisfied with having an MP voted in over and over again for almost 20 years just because of the party he represents? Even if he has done nothing for your area? Even if when you email, you dont get so much as a auto reply back?

A few years ago my child's school were doing a politics topic, they visited the houses of Parliament and invited the MP to come and talk to the children.... he didn't even respond and they ended getting the neighbouring MP to visit the school instead!

He's awful. But you know, I should respect the democracy and put up with living in a shite safe seat because people are too lazy to think past voting blue.

Depends what you class as privilege. Rural Lincolnshire is very Tory and I wouldn't consider it a privilege to live there, I'd hate it.

Look, it's your decision. You vote according to your choice.

Insulting voters who don't agree with you is uncalled for and counterproductive.

Of course you should respect democracy, why wouldn't you?

Absolutely not but it doesn't mean you have to live there, I have no idea of your circumstances so don't know if you actively moved to the area or never moved out, but you can use your vote for good even if tory still get in at least you know your vote wasn't counted towards that.

You can campaign for proportional representation https://makevotesmatter.org.uk/ and explain to people what it means. It is a real shame that the opportunity was missed with the referendum under the coalition. Many people don't understand what proportional representation is.

The referendum wasn’t for PR, it was for AV, which was a compromise between the Lib Dem’s who wanted PR and the Tories who wanted to keep FPTP

And throw the female population under a bus.

Ah, so nothing else matters at all, NHS, human rights etc etc?

There are many decent places to live with Labour MPs.

That's true, of course. But if I asked you to name the top 20 places in England you would like to live I'd be very surprised if more than 2 or 3 were safe Labour seats.

usernother · 23/05/2024 09:12

No point in me voting either because Labour always get in Urgh. But I'll still vote and not complain about it because I recognise that that's how democracy works and I'm grateful for it.

If the NHS can't tell the difference between a male body and a female body then they are no use to anybody (pun not intended).
