Is this cake OK to eat?

DH made a lovely cake but it has turned out dense/spongy looking. We're not sure if it's because it's underbaked or because it just didn't rise (he did mix the ingredients in the wrong order).

Would you say it's still safe to eat? We don't really want to waste it and the kids are keen to have some, but we don't want to get sick. Thoughts?

You won’t get sick, it will just be not as nice as a properly risen cake.

JengaCupboard · 22/05/2024 17:10

It's just what my mum would call 'sad cake' i.e. not risen - I actually prefer it; it's like squidgy brownie - stick it in the microwave and put some ice cream on it... you definitely won't get sick (I never have...)

If you like I'll come round and test it for you......

It'll be fine! What are you worried about?

Bjorkdidit · 22/05/2024 17:31

I don't understand how you think it could make you sick assuming no-one is allergic to any of the ingredients of course?

ImNotThereAmI · 22/05/2024 17:31

What in a cake would make you sick? It’s absolutely fine. Have you never eaten raw cake batter?

WeeOrcadian · 22/05/2024 17:35

Nope - it'll kill you

Send it my way, I'll take one for the team

I have some extra thick double cream that's equally manky

You're welcome 😁

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/05/2024 17:36

There's no way that a cake, whose ingredients each and separately are safe, would make you sick, why would it? Are you worried about undercooked eggs or something? That cake is cooked, just not very well.

WonderingWanda · 22/05/2024 17:37

I thought you were going to show me something covered in mould. It's fine, nothing in there that needs to be cooked to eat it, eggs are safe in the UK. If its a bit stodgy you could opt to crumble it and make cake pops.

^ this. Is it almond cake?

Id warm it slightly and serve with Ice cream or Greek yogurt and a few berries, cherries or apricots maybe

GalileoHumpkins · 22/05/2024 17:54

I don't think you'd get sick but it does look like it would glue your teeth together.

It does... Mmmmmmm yum!

Oktoeat23 · 23/05/2024 17:28

Just updating that we did it eat and it was delicious!

@BeanBeliever it is almond and cardamom!

No, it looks disgusting, you'll get seriously ill. Bring it round to me immediately and I'll make sure it's disposed of appropriately!!

Knittedfairies2 · 23/05/2024 17:37

If you've not finished the cake, pour custard over whatever is left as a pudding.

BeanBeliever · 23/05/2024 21:35

Sounds tasty! Glad you survived!

Edited

If it's a recipe where you use ground almonds instead of flour, you do get a dense texture, it's not as spongy as say Victoria sponge.
