URGENT - DOG ATTACKED PARTNER **Please read OP's latest updates** [edited by MNHQ]

Hi all, my 6yo JRT has attacked my partner twice this morning. He has recently developed some territorial aggression, and we have to 'coax' him away from his bed each morning. This morning was as normal, but he wouldn't come so we just left him. My partner went to get milk, about 2m away from him, and the dog lunged and has bitten his hand fairly badly. We managed to lock him away whilst we sorted things, and have since boarded a section of the kitchen away so he can get outside but also can't get to us.
Anytime we enter the kitchen he viciously barks. I have a 4yo at home, so this isn't something I can risk.
He has since bitten my partner again when we went to open the back door for him (by leaning over the barrier we've created) and it's really bad - blood everywhere and he is now in a&e.
I cannnot get near the dog. How do I get him to a point where I can get him checked out - or as I'm probably denying to myself, put to sleep..?
I'm in absolute bits - I just need advice please urgently.

To note - I can't get a vet to come to him, I have already called around

  • [Note from MNHQ: We've already edited the title to ask people to read the OP's updates before responding (just click on the See All tab). As that doesn't seem to have worked, we feel the need to explain here in the opening post that the OP's dog has been put to sleep by now as he was found to be suffering from a brain tumour. The OP is obviously in pieces about this so please be sensitive when responding.]

Hi all - an update - though I haven't read any replies or private messages since yesterday.

The police dog handlers arrived and were amazing. Got him in a crate without the use of any tools, just a confident officer, some ham and a nudge.

Sadly, after getting him to the vets and sedated, tested - he had a brain tumour.

We've just said our goodbyes. He went so peacefully and we spoke to him throughout. Even managed a cuddle before the euthanasia whilst he was sedated.

We are in bits, but he's in a far better place now.

Thank you for the support.

Sorry to hear this.

I posted earlier and that's exactly what i thought - a brain tumour.

No reason for him to change his behaviour so rapidly otherwise as you clearly loved him.

RobertaFirmino · 23/05/2024 14:19

I'm so sorry about your little dog. He was clearly a good boy. By allowing him to go, you gave him a luxury that is denied to so many humans - the luxury of a peaceful passing. I hope you will be OK.

SnapCackleFlop · 23/05/2024 14:19

I'm so sorry for all you've been through 💐 That picture of his wee paw 😢xxx

MistyWitch · 23/05/2024 14:21

OP I'm very sorry.

Was reading through the thread and brain tumour was going to be my guess.

We had a lovely collie who turned like this and had to be PTS because of a brain tumour. It's absolutely heartbreaking. Look after yourself Flowers

theimposter · 23/05/2024 14:24

So sorry about your dog. Take comfort that it sounds like getting him to the vet wasn’t too traumatic for him in the event and that he would have known you were there with him at the end. At least you now know there was a good reason too for his behaviour, poor lad. No more pain now. Sending a big hug x

I agree, so sad, he couldn’t have helped what he was doing.
God bless you and your family for caring enough to do the right thing and I’m glad you got to say a peaceful and kind goodbye.
The photo of his paw has made me cry.
Wishing you all well xx

I did wonder when I read the story. Lovely good natured pets rarely just turn on an owner for no reason.
Poor lad must have been feeling rubbish.

Pallisers · 23/05/2024 14:24

So sorry OP.

FlangeBoil · 23/05/2024 14:25

Thanks again - the reassurance here has honestly taken the edge off a little. I'm obviously still in bits but hearing that generally, most would have done the same and it seems to be right by him has really helped me feel a little more comfortable with this.

He was such a good lad. I've been looking at pictures of him all day, he was so loved, so spoilt and such a good companion to DD. Not sure when/how I'm going to tell her. She's only 4.

I thought I had loads more time with him, but I guess not. He was such a cuddly boy. Would sit on my desk whilst I worked because I hadn't given him attention for all of 3 minutes.

The house has fallen silent. His things are still scattered around - a job for another day.

A picture from a few days ago - my happy boy. His name is Donut. He was the absolute best ❤️

I’m sorry your have lost your friend in these circumstances but at least you know his aggression was not really his fault, he was in pain but could not tell you.
You did everything right and didn’t put your family at risk.

MenopauseSucks · 23/05/2024 14:44

The greatest gift we can give our pets is a gentle, safe farewell.

I'm sorry for your loss 😔 just because something is the right thing to do doesn't mean it's an easy thing to do. Take care of yourself

yes exactly this. I am so so sorry OP. Thanks

EdithStourton · 23/05/2024 14:48

I'm so sorry, OP.

A friend had to have a dog PTS due to aggression and I know how hard she found it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/05/2024 14:51

I am so sorry. This must have been such an incredibly hard thing to do. Donut loved you all very much and would never have wanted to hurt anyone and it can’t have come as a surprise that there was something drastically wrong. Dogs are so loyal, trusting and loving. Flowers

Insidelaurashead · 23/05/2024 14:53

I'm so sorry, OP. He looks like a lovely boy. I guess, if it's any comfort, you know that it's not HIM who bit your DP, it was the tumour, and it shouldn't change the way any of you feel about your beautiful boy

schoollane · 23/05/2024 14:53

Oh this made me cry 😓

Sleep tight, Donut. You were a good boy and you were loved.

ilovesushi · 23/05/2024 14:55

Sorry for the loss of your lovely dog xxx

sonjadog · 23/05/2024 15:00

What a lovely boy he was! And he had a good owner in you who looked after his needs right until the end. Although I am very sorry for Donut that this was the end of his life, I am glad you found out about the tumor, so you can look back on your little dog with untarnished good memories and remember all the great things about him.

MrsCarson · 23/05/2024 15:02

So sorry to read your sad update.
