Feet! Anyone got ideas to stop blisters?

Every summer this happens if I walk any distance. And if I go on holiday in the heat my skin basically falls off.

Worst part is my little toe and the toe next to it. They slightly tuck under and rub like crazy. It been so bad in the past I’ve basically degloved the first few layers of fkin on them.

I’ve tried putting blister plasters on in advance and that held it off a bit. I walked about 6km today, it was not that hot, low 20s and I had my comfiest trainers on. I’ve blistered my second in toe and ones popped. It feels like walking in a wound.

I can limp through (haha) but I’m going on holiday to sorrento in august. I know it will be incredibly warm and I’ve been through this before. I love walking and I don’t want to be in agony. There must be something I can do to stop the blisters forming? Shoes fit well in general, decent socks, tried plasters, blister plasters, silicon sprays…

Try the wee silicone toe sleeves to keep them separated.
I'll try to find a link. Hang on

RJnomore1 · 21/05/2024 21:27

Ooh that sounds promising and I haven’t tried them. A link would be great thank you

A tip DD got when she was doing DoE was that talc would prevent blisters. It worked for her, not exactly sure why.

I can't find the ones I bought on my amazon account, but I think they were called something like pinky toe silicone caps or something. The ones I got were assorted sizes. They really helped me.

RJnomore1 · 21/05/2024 21:38

Things like these?

Also I can see talc helping stop sweat and thus friction too. Thank you both.

Yes, but the ones I have are closed at the end. Like a thimble shape.

I hear you! Always had blistered/rubbing toes and heels with all types of shoes, even Birkenstocks (my dad was the same!!!). Apart from blister plasters I have not much more to suggest. But I would say in warm weather I have discovered incredibly comfortable espadrilles made in Menorca by a company called Naguisa, very stylish (and expensive) but worth every penny, the leather is so soft. Maybe an idea for Sorrento in the evenings?

I've had this problem my whole life. I do walk a lot normally but on holidays that doubles easily. Within 2 days of every holiday my feet are destroyed, blisters on little toes, between toes often up to 10 blisters which grow and sometimes burst. By the end of a week I can barely walk and they take weeks to heal.
I've seen podiatrists but not had much help.
One suggested i wear socks with toes in. I tried that, along with talc on my last trip. It helped a bit in that it took maybe 4 days instead of three for the blisters to grow.
I wear socks and trainers whatever the weather as bare feet / sandals are 10 times worse.
I'd love some ideas.

fortunetellingwizard · 21/05/2024 22:31

I have exactly this problem. I have regular medical pedicures which really help, as the hard skin which builds up on the squashed toe gets properly removed. The podiatrist recommended that I use these toe protectors when out for a walk. They have been a godsend. You can wash them under the tap with a bit of hand soap and they dry easily.

This worked for me on the back of my foot www.amazon.co.uk/Compeed-Anti-Blister-Stick-8-ml/dp/B000MV919I

ManilowBarry · 21/05/2024 22:34

Good old fashioned talcum powder.

You can buy talc free powder if you wish.

Never had a blister when I use talc .

MsFaversham · 21/05/2024 22:38

I second the Compeed anti blister stick.

TheSquirrelfromTheWirral · 21/05/2024 22:42

Have you tried that lanacane anti chafing stuff that goes on like a cream but dries like a powder? I find that helps but you need to keep applying it during the day… and it makes your feel slippy if you aren’t in flats

Persianpuss · 21/05/2024 22:45

Surgical spirit. You dab it on your feet twice a day and it thickens the skin and stops blisters forming. It doesn't make your skin look any different. Ballet dancers use it for their pointe shoes and hikers use it a lot too. Also cheap!

RJnomore1 · 21/05/2024 22:47

Thank you all! Im going to try them all… I’ll report back if somethings particularly good. I’m glad but sorry to hear im
not alone with this.

I've tried surgical spirit, soak my feet every day after a bath for a few weeks. Didn't help.
Talc helps a bit but only delays the onset of blisters.
I have compeed blister plasters, very difficult to fit in the gaps between toes and didn't help. They would be great on a heel or if a shoe was rubbing though.

I've ordered some of those toe covers, I get most of my blisters in between the toes though.
@TheSquirrelfromTheWirral not heard of anti chafing stuff, just looked it up. It reminds me of when DC were little and got a rash from swim shorts, I use to lather their thighs with vaseline. Ordered some..
This thread is timely as I go on holiday next week.

Solpa · 09/06/2024 11:28

Just back from a week's holiday and I am beyond delighted with the results.

On my last holiday I counted 13 blisters on my toes and between them. I could hardly walk at the end. This was in spite of all sorts of precautions such as talc, socks, well fitting shoes. I had a two day break in April and aquired five blisters.

This time I used the lanacane anti chafe stuff rubbed all over my toes two or three times a day. I walked miles every day, even wore flip flops around the hotel. Not ONE blister.
@TheSquirrelfromTheWirral Thank you for that tip. It's actually life changing.I'm 66 and had the blister problem all my life.
@RJnomore1 any luck?

RJnomore1 · 09/06/2024 23:51

I’m not away til August but im
taking everything in the thread! Lanacane abd the toe caps are top of the list thanks

When I walked the Camino I was advised to put Vaseline on my feet everyday. I did, and didn't get a single blister in 500 miles!
That's my top tip.
Not much help unless you're wearing socks though.
