Is granny style decor back in?

I’m trying to choose some curtains for my living room and I’m struggling. Ideally I was looking for something bright ish and fun to go with green to make it feel fresher. Previously had a lot of country style tweeds etc.

seen these and I’m almost considering that I like them?! Am I mad? I just feel with William Morris being so popular this style might be coming in, but if I’d seen them 5 years ago I would have set them on fire.

thoughts?

What exactly is “granny” style?

I’m a granny: I don’t like those.

SOxon · 21/05/2024 09:56

Are these Dunelm? we saw them or similar in the store and thought how attractive they were - fine with plain furniture and furnishings.

Choose what you like, not what others deem to be fashionable.

I think pretty patterns are in but it's not "granny" as you describe it, the granny I know (my mother) has plain curtains!

good grief

I don't think the term is helpful as 'granny' is meaningless. My granny would not have entertained those. I have seen the term 'cottagecore' a lot when looking at interiors, is that the sort of look you mean?

If you like the curtains, then buy them. I quite like that fabric but I have never liked pleated curtains personally.

Grumpynan · 21/05/2024 10:01

I like them and yes I’m a granny, but wouldn’t like how my granny had her house, or my mum for that matter 😂

I personally think, after years of keeping up with trends, and decorating the house and dressing to please others and fit in, do what you like, it’s your home express yourself be yourself, if you like them have them and sod everyone else. My home is a mix of modern/ traditional I don’t do lacy frill look, but I’m happy

Whoops sorry didn’t mean to be ageist.

I guess what I meant is the kind of curtains that you’d inherit when buying a house that hasn’t been touched in 50 years. We had loads of these types of houses in our village, with anaglypta wall papered ceilings and pink bathrooms. (I’m aware ironically both of these are now coming back in too!)

@SOxon they are actually the range but I’ve seen the DH elm ones online as well, good to know - I will try and check them out in person.

honestly I don’t really have a style, I’m definitely not trying to just keep up with trends I don’t know what I want. 10th are ago I was very country prints (think pheasants etc) and tweeds/ checks but I’ve gone off that now!!

So please, explain granny style to me.

"Granny style" Will always be in with me. Things in my house go from a 70's vibe to primitive colonial. I've been looking at quilts made by the Amish online too 👀 and rocking chairs. My husband is about to get a cd player for the house too. If it makes you happy go for it! I love those curtains, and if you want to give it a modern fresh vibe I'd make the rest of the room white and neutral with flower accents.

urbanbuddha · 21/05/2024 10:08

Go with your arsonist instincts.

Churchview · 21/05/2024 10:11

I like the curtains but they're too modern for my tastes 😂

Granny style has always been in in my life. I was born in a cardigan, planning WI type activities and am currently renovating my 1880s house so that it looks like it did in 1940 with all vintage decor, furniture and lighting. Buy what you like, have fun, make your home exactly as you want - nobody else's opinion matters.

If you don't have a clear idea of what you want, I would suggest go very plain and wait until inspiration strikes.

Cuppachuchu · 21/05/2024 10:21

There's a William Morris print with just leaves which is fresh looking. It's a smaller pattern too, which makes it more "timeless" I think.
They're a bit fussy for me. I'd prefer a fresh colour in an interesting texture, or a very small pattern/print.
