Advice re hair dye daughter

Beavers9 · 20/05/2024 21:22

In the summer hols we've promised our daughter she could die her hair -shes first getting it cut and donating it to a charity it's roughly 15inches king now so has grown the required amount then she wants it temporarily dyed . My worry is I've never dyed my self before so no idea what best brand to use is and also will it definitely wash out as 7 weeks later when school starts again I need her hair to be back to the blondey brown that it is
Any advice please

What colour is she hoping to achieve?

Sunshineclouds11 · 20/05/2024 21:37

Is she wanting a colour like pink, blue etc?

pastaandpesto · 20/05/2024 21:41

DD(14) has used Loreal Castings, which is supposedly semi permanent. Her hair is mid-brown and she wanted it darker (emo). From experience I know that hair usually goes much darker than the colour on the box, so I steered her away from the almost black colours, but her hair was still very, very dark initially. Fortunately it looked amazing!

That was a good couple of months ago, and although it's probably back to its natural lightness, it definitely isn't exactly the same colour as it was before - it's still got some tint in it.

I'm honestly not sure you could guarantee that any dye would completely wash out in 7 weeks.

For colour to take it needs peroxide, so it won’t be very temporary even if it says 21 washes, it will have affected the natural hair colour. The only truly temporary colours are wash in wash out, no peroxide, tend to be a bit red or orangey, won’t show much as the colour clings to the outside of the hair shaft, it can only be darker. Anything lighter is permanent.
would be better to have some professionally done subtle highlights or similar.

Cheshireflamingo · 20/05/2024 21:48

My daughter has medium brown hair and used to like pink streaks during the summer holidays. We used Schwarzkopf LIVE - it was usually mostly gone by the end of the holidays. One year we had to use dye remover. Depending on the colour you've used, dying it back to her natural colour might be an option.

MrsElsa · 20/05/2024 21:52

You want semi permanent colour and a hair colour remover for end of summer

Go to Savers:
Schwartzkopf LIVE semi permanent the one in the narrow box NOT the big box!! (need 2 packs for any longer than shoulder length hair!)
Got2B hair colour remover
And a nice rich conditioning mask for after removing the colour!

Beavers9 · 21/05/2024 06:03

@Sunshineclouds11 she wants blue

OP posts:
songaboutjam · 21/05/2024 06:14

Blue can be very difficult to get out of hair and may last longer than the advertised number of washes.

However, I was able to fade permanent hair dye (purple) to lightish green pretty quickly. It did take significant effort though and the green stuck around for a while before eventually blending with my hair.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 21/05/2024 06:28

I'd advise against blue.....or do the tips and make the end of the holiday when you cut the hair - I speak from experience.

My oldest did pink streaks and that 90% came out - youngest did blue (she was 10!) and it stayed.

We used manic panic. They are both dark blonde.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 21/05/2024 06:39

Does she want to do her whole hair or just parts of it? Tbh blue is a pain to get rid of , as it fades to green and it takes a long time.
Something like manic panic is temporary and washes out .

Sunshineclouds11 · 21/05/2024 08:02

Have a look at crazy colours

nancy75 · 21/05/2024 08:04

Blue is a nightmare, comes off on clothes pillows & face. Also doesn’t seem to wash out but fades to a horrible green

PenguinLove1 · 21/05/2024 08:04

I would tale her to a salon, get the tips coloured blue professionally and then get the ends trimmed off before she goes back to school

reluctantbrit · 21/05/2024 08:18

DD went purple last Summer and it washed out after 2 weeks, she had two sessions. She had the Schwarzkopf Live one.

A friend went blue but as other PP said, it doesn't really look good after a while.

I would either get her to choose a different colour or get it done professionally and cut it off before the school starts.

Greenflamesburn · 21/05/2024 08:25

Blue is horrible to get rid of to echo PP.
Lovely to start with then went green that was a pain as it stained the hair that colour. I had to go red for several months to counter it. It still failed to green 🤐In the end I had to stop going red take up a natural brown with lots of red under tones. And kept chopping till the damaged green stained hair grew out.
Red, or pink are easier. Avoid Purple especially if it's a dark one due to the blue in it.

La Richie hair colours are good - to note though I did always bleach first.

GentlemanJohnny · 21/05/2024 08:43

Just a warning. Hair dye will permanently stain the grouting between the tiles over your sink and the only way to fix it is to hack it out and re-grout (looking at you DD).

Be careful.

Fizzypop88 · 21/05/2024 09:18

I’m naturally dark blonde, I’ve done crazy colours in both pink and purple. Lasts 3-4 weeks, but pink is much better. Purple hangs about for longer and doesn’t look great after a while. I think it’s because of the blue undertones as previous people have mentioned.

Basicsandwich · 21/05/2024 09:29

I used a temporary blue on my daughters tips at the start of the 6 weeks holiday one year. Despite weeks of swimming, sunshine and regular shampooing, she had to have it trimmed off before she went back to school as the tips still had a tinge of bluey green about them. It just would not come out!

Bunnyannesummers · 21/05/2024 09:33

Don’t do blue. You can’t get it out. I had to chop my waist length hair to a Sabrina the teenage witch bob after the bleach needed to get blue out (but it was worth it because the blue looked incredible)

Bunnyannesummers · 21/05/2024 09:34

Shrine drops are probably the best option for other colours

It bleaches doesn’t it?! Eeek.

TheOnlyMrsW · 21/05/2024 09:46

Blue is a nightmare to get out, it will fade over the holiday but the only way to really get rid of it is to grow it or have it cut out..................Crazy Colour tends to be less vibrant than Manic Panic but it will still stay in longer than 7 weeks.

Your DD could potentially dye it a darker brown at the end of the period to cover it up but it won't go back to her natural colour in that time sorry!

Blue hair does look ace though - DD had hers done as soon as she left school after GCSE's (6th form allows different dyes/piercings etc) and hasn't looked back!

This is where a grouting pen comes in.

I think you can guess why I know this.....

You can get a grout pen for a couple of quid and go over it. It's essentially tippex for grout, and works a treat.

Op as everyone has said, blue is a pain, my dd is a different hair colour every month, but blue is definitely the worst, I usually do a bicarb rinse or 2, and the neutralise it with an orange based dye, and it's OK, but she always goes Iver it with a different colour so it doesn't have to be perfect.

Crazy colour fades pretty well, manic panic gets everywhere, the colours are great, but it does come off a lot, and directions is also pretty good, crazy colour is the best one imo.

If she wears her hair up lot then you could do under her hair, then you could work around it for school if it hasn't faded properly.

TaraT28 · 21/05/2024 14:33

If it is a dye that will show the colour, I suspect it will still be visible when she returns to school. If it is just streaks, it might not be too bad but it will still show.

One idea if she is planning to cut it anyhow is to bleach and colour the length that is coming off and start fresh and natural after the cut. That will likely mean that hair cannot be donated and she will only be able to colour the bottom length (assuming she still wants to keep some length after the cut).

Our DD has wanted to dye her hair and we have resisted so far as it seems like a lot of trouble to maintain. I only started colouring my hair to cover the grey and wish I did not have to do it.
