Alternative free phone book?

intothemist · 20/05/2024 16:45

So the BT phone book has now ceased to operate.

I have to regularly look up landline numbers for work...does anyone know of an alternative that doesn't cost too much? There's a page called uk phone book but you have to buy credits.

intothemist · 20/05/2024 18:03

If you're asking have I googled how to access numbers, yes I have and nothing free is coming up, just checking in case I've missed something...hope that's ok

What sort of numbers are you looking up
Residential ones?

Borborygmus · 20/05/2024 18:13

Maybe:

I know this isn't the point but what job do you have that involves this? I can't think of any, except cold calling?

Doesn't work anymore - the page comes up but it no longer works since end of April.

It might be for the best that you can’t get numbers this way any more - nobody wants cold calls. If you’re calling someone you already have a work relationship with, you’ll have the number already, or if it’s a business you can Google the name to get the number.

Thanks for your input but it's a job that's been done this way for years, speaking to people on behalf of public sector organisations (councils mainly) and it's never been an issue. Biggest problem is getting people off the phone when they want to rant about their bin collections.

Exactly.

If calling landline numbers is a core part of your job (eg cold calling) you would have access to a dataset to call numbers.

What exactly do you do that you would need to look up a phone number? If you know them, as a business, you can easily find their details online.

So what's the job? Why don't you have numbers to ring? Why would you go looking them up?

And so few individuals have house phones now, what would be the point?

mindutopia · 20/05/2024 21:12

I think it sounds like you need to change your approach with the times. I can't quite gather what it is you do, but I work in social research, sometimes on behalf of public sector organisations, and I'd be pretty shit at my job if I was relying on contacting people through their landline numbers. I would say more people than not, including businesses, do not have a landline number. Dh and I haven't personally had a landline number for over a decade. We have a family business that's been in operation for 11 years and has never had a landline. I work for one of the top universities in the UK and I don't have a landline in my office or any sort of dedicated way to reach me via phone at work (unless I give someone my personal mobile). If you are trying to canvas people to speak to about their opinions, you need to find them via email, social media, going door to door even, public events, community groups, etc.

I must admit I didn't try it before posting, but having just done so it appears to work, or am I missing something?

I’ve worked in the public sector for nearly 30 years and never known this to be a thing anyone has done on our behalf. I do, though, get lots of calls from scammers pretending to be my ‘local energy adviser’ working on behalf of the council, though they can never tell me which council, or which area, when questioned. These calls are always on my landline…

It must be cold calling, then, if that resource doesn’t work for the OP. Something which disproportionately disadvantages vulnerable people. If you would tell me which local authorities you have recently been working for, @intothemist , I will make a formal complaint to them.

I'm assuming despite that looking as though it was addressed to me it was for the OP?
